Crowd work can be a comedian’s secret weapon…
…or a one-way ticket to losing the audience (and your reputation).
The good news? Clean crowd work works — if you PREPARE for it.
You don’t need to wing everything.
Write 3–5 punchy responses to common crowd answers like:
“What do you do for a living?”
“How long have you been married?”
“Where are you from?”
These are setups. Your job? Stick the landing.
Clean doesn’t mean boring. You can roast without being mean.
Examples:
“You’re an accountant? That’s wild — I thought you were a magician, because I also fall asleep during both.”
“Married 15 years? That’s not a marriage, that’s a hostage situation… with insurance!”
Sex
Politics
Profanity
You can riff with energy, not edginess.
Surprise them, don’t shock them.
“Crowd work isn’t freestyle. It’s structured improv with a punchline waiting.”
Pick 3 crowd prompts and pre-write 2 clean punchlines for each.
Practice them in the mirror like mini bits.
Prompt Punchline 1 Punchline 2 What do you do? [your punchline] [your punchline] Married? [your punchline] [your punchline] Where from? [your punchline] [your punchline]
“Crowd work isn’t just clever — it’s clean when it’s kind.”
