My Conversation with The Washington Post

I recently got a call from Washington Post columnist and South Carolina resident Kathleen Parker to talk about my new book, Life of the Party.

What began as a conversation about the book quickly became a much broader discussion about the current state of the Democratic Party, where it has lost touch with voters, and what it will take to earn their trust again. Kathleen turned that conversation into a full column in today’s Washington Post.

We covered a lot of ground: my time in public office, lessons from campaigns in South Carolina, what it actually takes to run as a Democrat in deeply conservative communities, and what I heard from voters who felt ignored, talked down to, or written off entirely.

More than anything, we talked about where the party goes from here.
