Email marketing remains one of the most effective digital marketing strategies for small businesses. According to marketing guru Luiza Zhou, 64% of small businesses use email marketing to reach customers. Done well, email can generate up to $42 for every $1 spent.

For better or for worse, we’ve all become accustomed to checking our inboxes daily. Personally, I delete as many emails (unread) as I read, but for the brands I trust, I open them every day.

Why? Because they’re relevant, engaging, and I trust them. I became a loyal customer of Canadian men’s clothing company Manmade after seeing a funny ad on Instagram. I now enjoy reading their emails because they’re great storytellers and have earned my brand loyalty.

Are you part of the 36% of small businesses who hasn't tapped into this lucrative marketing channel? If so, it's time to rethink your strategy. And sending out generic mass emails won’t work with today’s savvy consumers.

To kickstart your efforts, consider using SLO framework: Story, Lesson, Offer.  This approach helps you craft emails that engage your audience and drive real results.

Let’s walk through it using a fictional one-man painting company, Sam’s Painting. Sam has been in business long enough to develop a significant email list, but his marketing has fallen flat.

  • Story: Connect with your customer by opening with a relatable scenario.

Example: Jeff stared at the scuffed walls of his living room, dreading the thought of tackling a paint job with his hectic work and family schedule. The thought of researching painters, getting quotes, and coordinating the work was enough to make him put it off indefinitely.

  • Lesson: Educate and build trust by empathizing with their problem.

Example: Like most people, Jeff struggles to find reliable, affordable painting services that fit his busy lifestyle. Painting a large room can be tedious and time-consuming. But hiring a traditional contractor often disrupts schedules or involves strangers spending days at your home.

  • Offer: Present the solution, your product or service.

Example: Sam’s Painting provides a hassle-free painting experience tailored to your needs. With over 15 years of experience, I manage the entire process from the initial consultation to the final cleanup, ensuring your project runs smoothly and yields great results. Competitive pricing, flexible scheduling, and dozens of 5-star reviews, guarantee a job done right, quickly, and efficiently. In fact, most residential jobs are completed in less than a day.

The SLO framework provides a structured approach to creating email content that resonates with your audience and inspires action. Lead with a relatable story, educate your subscribers about relevant issues, and present your product or service as the ideal solution. Tailor emails to your audience’s pain points and create messaging that stands out and drives meaningful results for your small business.
