Special Appearance(s) in September

Dr. Volts has moved up the street at the Gateway, and several of us local creators are appearing on Saturday, September 13, along with Doug Wagner (I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, Plastic, Vinyl, Plush, etc.). Looks like we’ll be there starting at 10 AM and going until we’re bored and leave.

I still have 25 copies of the “No Swears” edition of issue #1, I’ll bring with me to sell, as well as original artwork issues by myself and Greg Maldonado. But feel free to just come by with your comics and I’ll autograph them for you.

I’ll be appearing on panels at Salt Lake FanX and basically hanging around with my fellow creators each day. Here’s my current panels schedule, please use the FanX app to get the correct times and room locations, as these things can change at the last minute.

Kickstarting Your Comic Book

So you've created a comic book and want to get it out to a larger audience than just your mom. How can you do that when publishers seem to enjoy rejecting you? The answer is Kickstarter! We'll walk through how to get started, what channels to use for promotion, and the ups and downs of running a campaign. But what if you don't have a comic book created? Kickstarter is a great way to get the money you need to create your comic.

This is my panel, so I’ll be moderating and speaking with my friends, Evan Black, Chris Hoffman, and Andrew Malin about their experience working with Kickstarter, as well as taking audience questions.

Who's Who of the "Who"verse: The Doctor and Their Companions

"Who's your favorite Doctor?" For fans of Doctor Who, the answer is usually instanteous and deeply personal. With at least 15 different incarnations of the Time Lord, there are lots of versions to choose from. While they are all clearly the Doctor, they do have distinct variations, and this panel will discuss our favorite Doctors (their similarities and differences) as well as the companions they are paired with. Hop into the TARDIS and join us for a trip through time and space as we celebrate this iconic show.

I’ll be there to represent classic Doctor Who, since Tom Baker will always be my Doctor.

Dementites Unite! - How Dr. Demento Changed Radio and Comedy

Born Barret Hansen in Minneapolis, nobody has done more to shape the sense of humor of the world or the state of music today than Dr. Demento. Without him, there would be no "Weird" Al Yankovic. Very few people would know that fish heads are both roly and poly. Our blues would be decidedly unexistential. Names like Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Stan Freburg, Spike Jones, and PDQ Bach would be out there but known by far fewer folks. Join us for an explanation of why Dr. Demento is the lynchpin of the novelty and comedy record universes and why you should always keep your radio wound up and out of the way of the smogberry trees.

My adolescence was very informed by the Dr. Demento Show. I’m very excited to be on this panel.

From Eraserhead to Twin Peaks and Beyond: The Art of David Lynch

Few artists can truly be described as singular. Art is cyclical and artists follow trends. David Lynch did none of that. Not a single moment of his work looks or feels like anything else that anybody would have created. Join us as the celebrate the strange and wonderful life of a singular filmmaker and as we explore his truly weird work.

I can go on and on about the films of David Lynch. Here’s a panel that’s going to let me do that. And it’s a great way to close out your weekend at the Con!

Things are moving slowly forward on issue #5. Lala has told me she should have the colors done by the end of September, which means I can hopefully get the digital edition out in October and sent off to the printer. My son is getting married on Halloween, so I may have to wait until November to get my printing and shipping done.
