Hey Friends:

My Dad was born August 13, 1926. This Thursday would have been his 100th birthday.

This photo—actually this :43 videowas taken as he approached his 85th birthday. Mom and Dad were in the kitchen of their senior residence, and Dad was marveling at God’s design of the human hand. I pulled out my phone and asked him what the big deal was.

As you’ll hear, he insisted his wrinkled, bruised appendage was a “hundred year old hand.”

Of course, I corrected him. “Eighty-four,” I said. Then, Mom got in the act.

It’s all very amusing…to me at least.

Ken Payleitner passed away a few months after this impromptu video shoot. Fifteen years later, I still miss him. (Actually, this video might have captured the last time I shook my father’s hand.)

So, on what would have been his 100th birthday, I invite you to take a moment to honor the memory of my dad…and maybe yours, too.

What’s Up with Jay?

Speaking of grandparents, Sunday, September 13, 2026 is Grandparents Day. It’s not widely celebrated. But I know for sure that any grandma, nana, papa, or gramps you know would take delight in being remembered.

Instead of spending six bucks on a card, may I suggest my hardcover gift book, Hooray for Grandparents! or my softcover devotional, A Grand Way to Live.

Or, here’s an idea…

If you’re involved in a service club, civic organization, or ministry with members who are mostly seniors, invite me out to speak to your group in early September.
