Jason Herbert · Reckoning with Jason Herbert

It's Day 7 for me here on the Willow Fire in central Colorado. We've been working hard to do all sorts of firefighting things. As a driver, mostly what I do is deliver food and equipment to drop points along the way so they can be used by our amazing crews.1

One of the things I've been asked about is how fire camps operate. This being my third fire, I'm certainly not expert, but I can give you a peek behind the curtain.

I'm stationed at the ICP (Incident Command Post), where most people are camped out in tents before engaging with whatever tasks they're assigned, whether it's firefighting, ground support, public relations, planning, safety, and things like that. These fires require A LOT of people on the ground, often numbering in the hundreds to over a thousand on really big fires.
