Dearest Friend,

I hope you’re hanging in there as the year wraps up. If your past few months have been anything like mine, you’re probably feeling a little... deflated.

For us, as a family, we’ve charged the shield wall1 of 11+ entrance exams, secondary school scholarship applications, interviews and auditions, plus the general pace of life, which seems to only ever accelerate.

I’m an artist, but honestly, even I’m looking at my supplies right now and just feeling tired. They still inspire me, and I still crave creativity, but sometimes the gale force winds of life blow all those delicate creative thoughts out of my mind!

However, I still try to carve out 15 minutes to draw something, anything, that will restore my soul and reconnect me to my senses.

That’s why I’m looking forward to January for something more than just a fresh calendar page.

I’m looking forward to the Soulful Sketchbook, a course that I’ve created with YOU in mind.

I created The Soulful Sketchbook to be the antidote to creative burnout, digital fatigue, and that paralyzing fear of the blank page. And guess what? I need that antidote right now, too.

I will be going through the entire 6-week course right alongside you. My goal for the New Year is simple: to stop focusing on “perfect output” and start focusing on messy play—the core of this art journaling practice.

I’m dedicating January and February to:

  • Conquering my own pile of untouched watercolour paper.

  • Learning to process stress through ink and collage.

  • And restoring my creative soul through play.

The course is a sanctuary; a place to start the New Year with creative energy to give us momentum to tackle daily life. Art journals aren’t just a way to record the details of one’s day, but also a way to emotionally process all that has happened in our lives. They are a safe place to experiment, play, create and heal.

Each lesson will have two possible assignments: a gentle step (for when life feels overwhelming) and a deep dive (for those times when you’re inspired and full of creative momentum. You can always return to past lessons to do the either the gentle step, or the deep dive, at your leisure. I imagine you working happily, at your own pace, as you complete the course.

If you’re ready to trade in creative fatigue for creative flow, I invite you to jump in with me.

The course is designed to be your permission slip to be imperfect. It’s the kickstart we all need to make 2026 feel genuinely creative again. When you secure your spot today, your future self—the one who will be creatively energized and stress-free—will thank you for planning ahead. :-)

The Soulful Sketchbook launches in January 2026.

From now until the end of January, the price is $175 (Canadian). After January it goes up to $200 (Canadian).

Students will also receive a signed copy of my children’s book Magic at the Museum sent to them in the mail!

P.S. If you have any questions, please let me know! I’m happy to answer them.

I like to use my pencils until they are too tiny to use any more. Then I draw them… It’s becoming quite a collection of pencil stubs!

Guy Fawkes night is Fireworks Night in the UK. This year we enjoyed the fireworks and a full moon from our attic windows.

We live across the street from a Greek Orthodox Church. Just for fun, I replaced the text of the Psalm which I had copied into the speech bubble, with an extract from the Odyssey. I love the look of Greek typography. (Plus an unfinished page to the right… sometimes life is full speed and sketches don't get finished!)

I usually use any small flat object I can find. More often than not, it ends up being a discarded origami animal made by my daughter. It seems I’m not alone in using found objects as bookmarks. 😀

I loved your answers!

Next Month’s Poll: What type of writing tool do you use most regularly? Answer here:

Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.

I imagine my daughter sprinting into the overwhelming shield wall of each entrance exam, audition, or interview shouting “The dwarves are upon you!” just like in the Lord of the Rings. Ha ha! Just as a battle cry of confidence. It is a lot of pressure for a pre-teen to handle.
