You Are Not Seeing Your Life. You Are Seeing Your Story.

Jamie Graber · Returning To Yourself

Something happened with friends recently, and for one second I was sure I was being left out. It was nothing anyone did, just a small moment, the kind that passes in a breath. But the feeling arrived fully formed, the way it always has, because being left out is my oldest wound and my mind knows the route to it by heart.

Years ago, that one flicker would have run my whole day. I would have gone looking, without realizing I was looking, for every other sign that confirmed it, and I would have found them. You always find what you go looking for.

You do this too, all day, without meaning to. The only question is what you havetrained yourself to find.

We’ve talked before about the simulation your mind is always running, the model it built out of everything you’ve already lived, the way it keeps using your own life as evidence for itself. This is the piece of it I haven’t shown you yet, the actual machinery that chooses what you even get to see in the first place.

There’s a system in your brain with a real name, the reticular activating system. It’s the part that chooses what gets through to you and what gets filtered out, because far more is happening around you than you could ever take in. It’s the reason that the moment you start looking for a certain pair of shoes, you see them on every other person on the street, while the friend beside you never notices a single pair. The shoes were always there. You gave your brain the order to find them, so it did.

Your brain is not showing you the world. It is showing you the world you told it to expect.

It runs this to keep you safe, and to your subconscious, safe means familiar. So it keeps handing you proof of the story you already believe, over and over, until the story stops feeling like a story and starts feeling like the truth.

Here is where it turns personal. The same filter that can gather proof you’re supported will just as easily gather proof you’re not. If some part of you believes you’re not chosen, or not safe, or not the one things work out for, your mind will spend the whole day building that case. And it will win, because enough happens in a day to prove almost anything you hand it.

If you’re the person keeping a running tally, mostly without meaning to, of every reason the life you want belongs to other people and not to you, this is for you. You are not broken, and you are not a negative person. You have a filter doing exactly the job it was built to do. It’s been taking its orders from a belief you set a very long time ago.

You are not seeing reality. You are seeing the case your mind has been building against you for years.

The wound underneath is the one it serves first. Mine is being left out. I’ve done years of work on it, and what finally changed things wasn’t a mantra or a perfect morning routine. It was one ordinary week, and something that happened three days after that moment with my friends that showed me exactly how the whole thing comes apart.
