This week, to celebrate the release of the first issue of True Weird: Beast of Borikén, we have a special newsletter drop-in from its writer, Julio Anto!
Growing up in the 1990s, the Chupacabra was everywhere. From the X-Files, to newspaper tabloids, and the Spanish-language news programs I watched with my grandparents, it seemed as if there was a sighting every single week. As a kid, it was both terrifying and exhilarating. Pair that with a love of monster movies like Creature from the Black Lagoon and it was only a matter of time before I wrote my own cryptid story.
Enter: Beast of Borikén!
Set in modern-day Puerto Rico, this five-issue series is a love letter to the creature features of my youth, and to the activists fighting tooth and nail to protect their beautiful island every single day. One part gory tropical horror story, one part political thriller, Beast of Borikén follows Loli, an organizer trying to prevent a land developer from building a luxury hotel complex on protected land. But when the ground-breaking goes ahead, a centuries-old chupacabra, one that dates back to the time of the Taíno – Puerto Rico’s indigenous people – will be awoken.
I can talk endlessly about this story, because it means so much to me, but more important than that is Daniel Irizarri’s incredibly humanistic cartooning. I have been both privileged and absolutely blown away by his art for the better part of a year and I can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on our first issue if only to marvel at Daniel’s art. He and our colorist Patricio Delpeche are a perfect match and Lucas Gattoni, our letterer, rounds out the team wonderfully.

Now available online: Ian Bertram’s artbook, Acheron!
For the last 13 years, artist Ian Bertram has kept sketchbooks. Part journal, part therapy, these incredibly personal books are where Ian worked through his life. Beautiful works of art, intimate and vulnerable, never before seen by the public. Tiny Onion convinced Ian to let us help him combine them into one book, and share it with the world. That book is Acheron: a deluxe, bespoke recreation of Ian’s sketchbooks built to his meticulous specifications; a celebration of physical media.
Acheron is an oversized landscape hardcover artbook, featuring 60 pages of beautiful artwork with a handwritten introduction by Ian himself. Our goal was to make it feel as if you are holding Ian’s original sketchbooks. The book is a unique size at 9”x12”, and printed on a gorgeous 200gsm paper, to replicate every intricate detail.
