James Tunney · Reflections on Revolution & Revelation

I believe we live in a teeming set of spirit worlds with great diversity though we have lost discernment and ability to comprehend them. Egregores are believed to be existent perhaps in the imaginal domain. To some, egregores may even be pre-existing forms that feed on us as we give them our thoughts. To others they can be constructed and used. Some think an egregore may be a hybrid external entity reflexively informed by human interaction. What exactly is an egregore? Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood are real to many. Sherlock, at least, was a construction. Does he represent an entity or rather a collective form or not? Famous ventriloquists create personae in dummies. This article is not quite Egregores for Dummies but rather wondering whether egregores exist as entities or if things, perhaps like Dummies, can house egregores. We might consider egregores in terms of projections of archetypal resonance or even as something in the Akashic records which do not reach the idea of inherent perfect forms of Plato. Egregores are associated most with projecting our thoughts. But they can become a general placeholder blob which camouflage specific willed mechanisms of elites.

Many believe humans can create new realities or even entities through their thoughts, such as with the tulpa. Is it true that thought-forms, especially collective ones, can generate or animate a force with independent existence? Many thought so in the past. Indeed they will often accept such possibilities over products of prophets. Why do many people accept the idea of a thought-form entity, metaphorical or even actual, whilst they may vehemently renounce the idea of existing entities we encounter or are revealed to us from heaven? The concept of egregores perhaps promises more explanatory power than it delivers. Today, AI might be considered from an esoteric perspective as an advanced thought-form instantiated in an actual algorithmic arrangement with emergent properties. From Judaism to magic today, intermediate beings assume a reality for many. Sebastian Morello in an article entitled Incarnation and Egregore: Two Principles in Opposition from February 2024 argues,

“The Christian mind is inclined to understand all evil spirits as demons. Demons, however, belonging as they do to the angelic genus, transcend human beings in the ontological chain of being employed by the Church’s traditional theology. That is why demons descended - or ‘fell,’ to use the more homiletic terminology - from above to below. Egregores, on the other hand, rise from below to above, being conjured by human minds enslaved by error. In the words of the great Christian Hermeticist Valentin Tomberg, an egregore “owes his existence to collective generation from below.” But just as blessings are not angels yet do require angels to bring about their effects, so too are egregores, who are not demons but emerge in part through the action of demons and are themselves at least demonic.”

He suggests fascism and communism are egregores. Many consider wokeism an egregore - which is interesting because the term egregore implies something about being awake. But there is no inherent idea that egregores are inevitably negative, though many occultists think so. That may reflect the disposition of practitioners who wish to create such forces. A familial curse may have hallmarks of an egregore. Recently, the Mayo football team won the All-Ireland Championship which they had failed to do for 75 years, supposedly as the result of a curse. This was well-known though actuality of the curse is still disputed. It was cast as a result of a supposed lack of respect of the returning celebratory team in the context of a funeral on their way home. It was meant to have been pronounced by a priest or a traveller on the team the last time they had won in 1951. The claim was that Mayo would not win until all the members of that team were no longer alive. The last survivor died a couple of years ago. Whether you thought the curse was real, believed it or not, a credible explanation or could find evidence against, there was arguably an entity-like form that survived and was fed, reinforced and even acted on the psyche of people and, no doubt, players. In this negative realm of curses we might encounter cousins of the egregore. Morello makes another connection.

“Perhaps, then, when we read the following words of Saint John the Divine, it is the danger of egregores that we ought to have in mind:

Many antichrists have come; therefore, we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us.” (1 John 2:18-19)

What are these ‘antichrists,’ these many beings that have their source in us but are not—or are no longer- part of us? I venture to suggest that the Beloved Disciple is warning the Church about the reign of egregore.”

Well before Jung’s autonomous complexes, the 4th century Christian monk Evagrius Ponticus explained how logísmoi were quasi-independent images and ideas that tempt and lead us into the seven deadly sins. But the seven deadly sins have become standard norms today so that track is under-emphasised. Be lustful, have pride and so on is the inversion. Thus the floating reflexive forms become positive self-liberation or something else. In modern times, the idea of creation of human life re-activated old ideas such as the golem. It is implicit in Frankenstein and many versions of Pygmalion. If we can create life, many assume we become gods. Hence many scientists are talking of a Second Genesis based on gene-editing. Norbert Weiner (the father of cybernetics) warned us however that scientists would create new golems and act as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice through misuse of information systems. Ideas of the egregore link into feedback, recursive or strange loops that inform information theory. The Antichrist, antichrist or anti-Christ could be an egregore or the concepts could also be for some people.

The popular concept of ‘egregore’ comes etymologically from egrḗgoros and the Greek verb grēgoréō, to be awake or to watch. In modern esoteric tradition however the term indicates an esoteric idea of a thought-form conceived to have individual coherence or existence on an astral, mental, spiritual or phenomenal plane. They apparently arise through ritual, repetition, will and behaviour. Just like the idea that thoughts are things, forms can be initiated into existence by magic or practice. The underlying idea might be echoed in different ideas of morphic resonance and the etheric realm. Other related occult ideas might include ‘servitors.’ Relative popularisation of the concept of egregore is associated with a turn to the East away from Christianity. It manifests in magic. In traditional European magic or spirituality, the concept might fit more easily into a different framework. Whilst the history of tulpas and golems is fairly well-established, presence or profile of egregores corresponds with modernism in the West.

The word ‘egregore’ rose rapidly in frequency of use from 1996 onwards about 5 years after the rise of the word ‘meme.’ It came from more esoteric sources through a greater openness to magic and alternative spirituality through internet forums into wider discourse. This reflected the perception that how people interact and project externally can be reflexively relevant through emergent properties that appear to have their own corporate reality. But are they real or imagined? Are they not in a mass form just describing collectivity, collective identities in an interconnected world, the processes of contagious communication or memetics? Let us begin earlier.

A popular alternative story of the early phase of creation involves the Book of Enoch. This was not part of the Catholic canon but mentioned in various writings of the Church fathers as well as the Epistle of Jude and the Ethiopian canon. The Book of Enoch and its story of Watchers and Nephilim is popular again after more evidence emerged from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Although the discovery did not impact on Catholic teaching, they did ignite popular and esoteric interest and also a narrative of suppression. Focus on what the Book says is obviously important, but what it represents may be more important. Its composite late Second Temple Judaism context fits into a trend of remarkable apocalyptic writings. I suggest a contest between five views. One view is that it was part of the original Christian movement. A second view comes from the canonical Christian perspective which merely recognises in passing the content of the Book of Enoch but has developed subsequent ideas of Satan and fallen angels. A third view accepts the Book of Enoch as definitive into which Genesis must be located and points to continuous recognition in some traditions. A fourth view uses both in an interplay and seeks to apply Enoch to correct Genesis. A fifth rejects both. This Enochian tradition suggests a fall of heavenly beings that both instruct and corrupt humans through hybridisation where Enoch is an intermediary who pronounces a condemnation on their ungodliness. It is surprisingly modern in a way and makes one wonder whether human hybridisation with technology is not final cause in the world of the fallen technocratic angels by assimilating God’s creation or making human host an alien intelligence. If that were the case, the demonic (even daemonic) or distributed intelligence will seek to possess humans.

Taking a pragmatic perspective, there is good reason for the minimalist Genesis interpretation of the first view. The benefit is avoidance of speculative theology and occult engagement. If the core of the story of apple on the tree was one about avoidance of a certain perspective, then a tight approach to Genesis may reflect the cautious moral in the story. A contained approach may avoid actual or archetypal mistakes of Adam and Eve made available through premature exploration of occult knowledge and conjuring. The history of magic and sorcery is related to tales of contacting spirits and use of hidden knowledge for indefensible aims. That the British Empire was invoked by John Dee, who explored Enochian language, whilst scrying and communicating with ‘angels’ could be cited. Crowley and Parsons followed Dee in derivative practices. Yet we are not to be like God in all ways. Knowledge of good and evil might involve exposure thereto. It may be the epistemic scheme and how we know or seek to know becomes the problem. If we sacrifice attention to the greatest of all - God, and instead focus on power and control, we are apt to become vulnerable to unseen forces whose territory we have transgressed. On the other hand, if God (after Anselm’s ontological argument) is taken as an epistemological condition of possibility of infinite possibilities creating a divine, defined order, we can work from there down to earth, without being limited by lesser knowledge. Thus we become receptive and open, not shutting off potential by pride. The Prometheus myth reflects archetypal ideas at play. We should receive rather than pull down by technique or force. The Watchers were egrēgoroi, watchful or awake ones, (maybe even woke)… But later that word gathered another esoteric dimension not from figures sent down from the heavens, but thoughts sent out from humans. In Daniel 4, a Watcher came from heaven in a dream to the King and this dream itself seemed to come from God. The Watcher term apparently depends on the Greek which relates to an Aramaic term not common elsewhere. So it might mean an angelic being. That sense of a Watcher anticipated subsequent modern variants that substantially departed from that holy theocentric conception. The more modern conception arguably came from an imperial turn to the East which produced an anthropocentric variant that superseded existing Western conceptions that were being displaced. Imperial Orientalism helped deconstruct both Catholic and indigenous Western folk conceptions. Though unrelated referents, the separate words based on egregore indicate that a God-send became a collective thought-send in sort of reverse revelation or inversion.

If the frequency of usage of the later meaning ‘egregore’ is significant, we see a number of phases. It emerges in French occultism in the mid-19th century and from that milieu, related concepts became associated with figures like Éliphas Lévi in the 1880’s but it fell off at the end of the decade. It reappeared in the 1920’s in Theosophical and Martinist circles which maintained continued interest in it since its revival. It was linked to Russian esotericism through to writers like Valentin Tomberg, especially in context of discussion of the Tarot. Another phase of growth was in the 50’s and 60’s assisted by psychotherapy. But the modern frequency mountain began in the mid 80’s and shot up circa 2000 to heights never reached before. The concept of the egregore became magnified and amplified and treated seriously. The concept itself may have given rise to its own reflection, the egregore of the egregore, but what is true if any?

A number of questions arise about egregores’ ontological status. They can be internal complexes, external entities or somewhere in-between in the imaginal space. They can be represented as materialist metaphors, psychic projections, ontologically real or magical constructions. I suggested the present increase is fundamentally related to the internet. Accordingly I propose an assimilative, specific class of egregore called an E-gregore. Ironically the E-gregore through technology also reverts to a modern fallen Watcher through surveillance in the Society of the Spectacle. Thus a unifying etymological link can be rendered to rouse a more contained, defensible or relevant version made real by mechanical watchers, eyes in the sky, smart dust, sky dust, micro-drone swarms and Five Eyes.

Otherwise there is something very unconvincing about the explicatory power of egregores to me as thought-forms in a contemporary context. They are too easily deployed to simplify complex interactions that require careful and even cautious analysis. I would note two forces that must be considered first. One is the parallel between rise of modern science and construction of invisible entities. The growth of comprehension of the phenomenon of electricity led to Frankenstein animation and many materialists had to reassess their worldview. The second is expansion of corporate form. Today, people do not understand the plethora and power of corporate form to influence reality. The East India Company could rule India with a few hundred individuals before the Empire officially took over. These Oriental constructions were produced or expanded conveniently in the heart of an empire informed by microbiology, electromagnetism and quantum theory when Empire had decided to transform itself and Christ and God were being buried. Egregores appeal to the Promethean materialist mind open to technology and transnational consumerism entranced with the exotic from empire but unwilling to accept a restraining order.

Many people that talk of egregores will laugh at reality of angels and demons. Egregores suit the modern mind because they can be made up. Proponents can point to the Eastern lineage without having much genuine experience of it. We seem to accept things we can make and project but are unwilling to accept ontological reality of pre-existing systems. In particular, we cannot accept that the world as conceived collectively or believed-in for centuries in Europe might be real, with God of the Good at the top - or at least a hierarchy and ancient chain of being. God for the 9th century Irish philosopher Eriugena, was as rich as any Oriental conception and resists the narky straw-man parody subsequent atheism has projected. In Periphyseon (On the Division of Nature) we encounter an apophatic, non-being beyond being, that makes much modern discussion seem crude and ignorant.

If we consider the spiritual world is merely or mostly made of thought-forms, we probably have confined ourselves to lower astral levels at the least. If we think we know what constitutes particular egregores we may dabble with forces that are creatures of our mind and meet ones which are not. In particular, the egregore concept seems to be useful to dismiss the previous world, especially the Christian. Thus some suggest one might blaspheme to escape the egregore of Christ or that Christ is an egregore. This constructivist metaphysics is very related to a non-Christian and anti-Christian sentiment notwithstanding imaginative appropriation by Tomberg and others. Morello indicates how egregores in the Hermetic tradition might be considered ‘antichrist’ forces. Let me make a suggestion for your consideration.

The mono-revolution describes a constant war against the monotheistic tradition, God and Christ in general and Catholicism in particular through St. Peter detectable back to King David (see Defining the Mono-Revolution and Sili-Transubstantiation). The concept of the West is based on reforms of the 11th century, considered by many theorists, like Fournier Heussy, Berman, Barraclough and Watson to be source of the legal tradition that founds the West. Magical or sorcerous opposition to that tradition arguably aims to destroy it and I argue recreate a global zombie slave-state. But this force has to destroy this worldly foundation on the spiritual foundation of Jesus. Paul said Christ was foundation, Peter was the actual rock. These constitutive reforms were led by Pope Gregory VII and were cosmological as well as jurisprudential. The West, on this view, is partially founded on the Gregory of reform. The tradition of Catholicism had to be inverted and de-sacramentalised by spellcraft. Take it as an unconscious adversarial symbol if you will, but the disincarnated product of the will is an inversion of the Incarnation as some Christian thinkers have noted. But it could also be more deliberate. Egregore could represent part of the reconstruction of the West.

Reconstruction of the West involves massive undermining from the East through Orientalism that radically altered concepts through thinkers like Nietzsche and Kant. Expansion of the egregore is arguably part of a simulacrum of the spiritual world that contributes to the mono-revolution as oppositional to the Gregorian force. Egregores are part of the new watchers coming into power. The Gregorian protection of the Logos and Being is being challenged by logos of tech-companies with their new Apple of temptation. Singularity of the Incarnation is opposed by the AI-Singularity of dis-incarnation. Egregores could be regarded as materialist projections that are part of the process of deconstruction. Where they may seem to work is when they engage in actual sorcery by communing with demonic forces. This is what many magicians sought to do. But that elite practice is obscured in relative mass inflation of the concept.

If a large part of the esoteric community becomes defined principally as antithetical to Christianity, they may become accessories to an egregore recognised in their own terms as cohering around the anti-Christ force. If preoccupation of financial, industrial and esoteric elites with the Middle East involves fascination with Watchers and Nimrod, then their platforms that appear to be exploring are instead perhaps entrenching the posthuman world. The critique of an anthropocentric world is founded on a critique of a theocentric one. Here we have a strange linguistic chance (?) commonality in the name of ‘Gregory.’

If the West was significantly based on the assimilative Western Legal Tradition defined by Gregory, then the West has a strong Gregorian core. Existing diverse traditions were harmonised and directed to the perceived Good away from impure reason (Plato warned about) to a beneficial, predictable and stable order. Legal codes were shepherded. Gregory is the name of some of the most significant popes. Ironically the name came from the same root of being watchful or awake. Gregory the Great was very influential in the 6th and 7th century and is associated with Gregorian chant. Gregory VII created the modern structure of the Church. Gregory the XIII gave us the reform calendar. The Gregorian tradition could be seen by some to be an egregore itself, especially in view of certain perennialist or Traditional writings. The word ‘Gregorius’ echoes also an etymologically unrelated but relevant word gregarious appropriately meaning ‘flock’ in Latin. I wonder whether the egregore represents an anti-Gregorian aspect. Egregious means out of the flock. Gregory personifies a spirit of harmonisation. For Chris Langan, Satan is an egregore and for others the Antichrist is an egregore. This juxtaposes the Gregorian tendency by excising heavenly orientation for a produced Promethean process. Interestingly the demon ‘Legion’ that Jesus exorcised - represented a collective entity which could act through the thought of the possessed. Sebastian Morello argues,

“As I have suggested, a truth that has become incarnate is the antithesis of a falsehood that has grown into a spirit. The Incarnation of the Eternal Logos in Jesus Christ is the great pivotal repudiation of the reign of egregore in history. For this reason, life in Christ - ‘the Way,’ as the early Christians called their religion - is the only way out. And the Incarnation is extended through innumerable creative and dynamic ways in our civilisation, a civilisation that is still running on the fumes of Christendom.”

The paronomasia of an egregore (or E-Gregore) may suggest an egregious spirit like the Solid State Entity of John Lilly into which we are entrapped by electronic endosymbiosis. It may mean the Watcher sent from heaven could be corrupted into a wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing, not a member of the flock and surreptitiously awaiting control. Thinkers like Charles Williams expressed an idea of ‘co-inherence’ which suggests a type of reflexive relationship as in the Incarnation whereby a romantic theology allows an exchange and substitution of suffering through sacrifice. We should not yield a comprehensive spiritual worldview with real interactions for a lesser psychic counterfeit specifically calculated to provide a shadow simulacrum of the divine. Just as a commercial brand or trademark has value as goodwill that can be valued and sold independently and may seem analogous to an egregore, the flock of sheep is branded. The Book of Revelation 13:17 says,

“And he shall make all, both little and great, rich and poor, freemen and bondmen, to have a character in their right hand, or on their foreheads. And that no man might buy or sell, but he that hath the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

The original word could mean a brand. We do have brand in our hands already, Apple and so on. This appropriately enough is the mark of Adam and Eve in practice even if you don’t believe it or believe it was not an apple. It is always about desire for the power of knowledge outpacing human spiritual evolution as AI demonstrates.

Is the modern egregore concept consistent with Christian thinking, apart from ideas perhaps of the Prosperity Gospel or maybe charismatic aspects of Pentecostalism or more sophisticated Tomberg views? Tomberg is defensible but there is also a need to re-embrace the ‘discarded image’ of C.S. Lewis and some of the recurrent ideas of spiritual strata. Psychic or sociological reality is not spiritual reality or ontology. If we are in a spiritual battle between good and evil or theocentric and anthropocentric, or spiritual and technocratic, then the vectors of victory are competing and opposite. One principally comes down and descends like grace and one primarily ascends by will. Both also involve a counterpart, shadow or illumination. Thus there is a fall from heaven or on earth as a shadow and ascension as an illumination in contrast to the purely human willed rise in self-exaltation. Ascent can become a recovery and descent can be a renunciation from divine order.

When Robert Kirk was explaining dimensions occupied by fairies he was indicating a world everyone knew in local contexts in Ireland and the Highlands. In correspondence between Malachi Martin and Wolfgang Smith we see a parallel consideration. From his experience in exorcism, Martin talked about the ‘intermediary plane.’ Smith referred to Vedantic concepts which he had genuine knowledge of. However as a scientist, he knew science was pointing to such a domain. This was a dangerous domain for Martin. What are we talking about here? I put it this way.

Rejection of the supernatural has been replaced with a post-materialist (often) Theosophical appropriation informed by an Oriental turn which seeks to project upwards partly in absence of the old hierarchy to balance ideas of emanations. Idealist reduction brings all back to the human as source and ignores descending emanation of grace, though ‘emanations’ characterise such worldviews. Whilst there are internal modes of the human and external forces - there is a field of intermediation. The human psyche or spirit is open to external forces. Some are ontologically real and exist in different dimensions, like the fairies. Some are mental or psychic and can be said to have some existence, especially in the imaginal world as explained by Corbin. Others are genuinely spiritual forces which exist ontologically beyond time and space in an eternal zone. In many conceptions, the creatures or entities of the lower zone close to earth cannot progress, because they have fallen from or rejected higher zones or possibly were never created by higher forces or indeed may be projected. Much current ‘spiritual’ exploration is associated with contacting lower or fallen angels or beings or letting them possess us or our world or compelling them to perform functions. This is the Faustian sorcerous tradition of magic and much Western sorcery of Goetia and Grimoires. While Steiner could see the influence of Golgotha on the etheric level, most moderns find everything but Christ. The earth has an animasphere like a Bardo plain we must escape to go home. Therefrom entities can work and descend into our imaginal potential. We can project but should not reject ancient knowledge from Western indigenous tradition which was largely synthesised into early Celtic Christianity. It is a cruel irony that many occultists call on Jesus to protect them whilst convincing Christians He does not exist for them. This is part of the Ahrimanic deception that must displace the Abrahamic reduction. Like Goetia ultimately opposed Golgotha, egregores oppose the Gregorian tradition. Goetia and egregores are symbols of the mono-revolution against the Gregorian West.

Paradoxically I guess you may hear more and more about ideas such as a project to build a ‘space elevator’ in a new obvious space-frenzy of desire manifest among popular influencers. Ironically, this could conceptually have been originally inspired by the knowledge that the narrow gate involved a ‘strait’ i.e. confined way. Cosmism drew heavily on Christianity in an odd way. Esoteric materialism apes the Christian spiritual meaning in material dimensions. Failure to focus on true spirituality makes you susceptible to diversion (also the French for distraction which echoes in the English). The French led the occult revival. Paris was full of devil-worship and alchemists at the end of the 19th century.

We have been opened up to a perilous misrepresentation of the spiritual landscape. As my father often quoted, fools rush in where angels fear to tread. But ascension by willpower for your own satisfaction may lead to getting off the metaphorical ladder at a low rung and not getting back on it, or ending up in an eternally recurrent loop. My book Plantation of the Automatons had the subtitle ‘Rule of an Automaticity Loop’ and delves into a similar worldly trap. That is how alignment or accord of personal with divine will in the mystical tradition is distinguished from sorcery. You cannot assert yourself over God or make grace up. Worse, your spirituality may be hijacked and possessed by immanent, mundane forces like the military-industrial complex. Call me old-fashioned. God is spiritual gravity. The same structural necessity that makes creation and coherence possible, makes meaning possible that makes dialogue possible. The connection with the Enoch is that he was able to comprehend the intermediary dimensions with approval of God. The E-gregore allows the Matrix incorporate the human species by enveloping them in a tech-network that transforms them into something no longer created in God’s image and locates their soul in an intermediary plane from which no spiritual connection to the divine becomes possible. The transitional planes are manifesting in the immanetizing of the eschaton, attempting to pull the heavens into human control.

That certain ideas come to the surface is resurface is often linked to fundamental turbulence. We are more familiar now with non-Western concepts such as the Wendigo or Wetiko than traditional ones. Likewise egregore arose form a post-Enlightenment occult revival context in the 19th century France and elsewhere was informed by Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, Kabbalah and Theosophy. Its plasticity today offers less explanatory power than that it ignores whilst presenting as progress.

You don’t have to be a genius to work out the New World Order is here. You can listen to President Tharman of Singapore at Davos apparently dancing around the use of the term new world order seeming to deny it before using it and then altering the term. ‘This is not a transition to some new world order…” He then says the task is “…to construct a decent world order…” “So we’ve got to construct that new world order.” Then correcting himself he says “Or I should say… multiple alliances of the willing.” This MAW is clearly the NWO now. As this mysterious corpus emerges we must understand that it will be a godless one. Deepak Copra said in the Epstein email ‘God is a construct.’ This is what Bolsheviks and Marxists thought and how billionaires think. BlackRock-Bolshevism is as anti-God as the original Red movement and League of the Godless. This is not a side-issue but foundation of the new world, see my book Trotsky vs Jesus. Let me leave aside the honest, decent, logical and indeed noble atheist. But there are powerful people who are against God for other reasons and promote that cause self-interestedly. If we think merger of humans and machines is merely theoretical, look at Chopra talking to Epstein in the Epstein files. If your exploration takes you away from God and commitment to basic principles of human dignity, you may be getting involved in masking that makes you part of the darkness. Then with your back to God you face your new associates in the dark. Some people are convinced there is no wider context of existence and some reject it. Both cases may seem to give licence to do what one will. The aesthetic of ideology often manifests in esoterica calculated to reject Christ. Elite groups use esoteric reconfigurations presented as revealing and novel but based on ancient ideas to re-engineer existing conceptions.

A delusion of the scientific community is that their technical elite status in relation to technology, theory or technique confers entitlements to govern and make decisions beyond the domain they operate in. This elite idea is cultivated by political, corporate and ideologically-motivated players. The intellectual conceit that has come to define many scientists in the last century or two bleeds into an entitled, adjacent, opportunistic space beyond public scrutiny. In that sense, the elite (small number in certain domains) can increase esoteric concentration. Esoteric refers also to small circles with internally communicated knowledge or initiated. Corporate and institutional filtering of scientists willing to serve the global system means they are the esoteric community in many senses. There is evidence of an occult interest again and again among scientists who purport to reject spirituality and mysticism. New ‘spiritual science’ can assist the Empire of Scientism.

With the death of Christ, the veil over the Holy of Holies was rent in a new symbolic and actual phase of access to God through the person of Christ. The holy and sacred became mass and committed to expand and be accessible to all the nations. Elites (such as among scientists) reject the restraints of Christianity and want to retrain the mass to regard them as infallible authority. With AI, the corporate intelligent complex of conditions that provide the technology acts as an oligarchy with pretensions to a new world creating The Mythic Aim of AI. The new elite that reject religion are generally transhumanist or posthumanist. They claim entitlement from technical leverage to extend power into domains of control and existential decision-making for the species. The system of supply of the propaganda model run by tech-elites promotes a new mass of esoterica which is sketched as a new dogma of exploration and physiological sensationalism to derail the exoteric dogma of religion and institutions. Algorithmic alchemy and neo-occult, neo-paganism are often adjuncts of the military-industrial complex not so much continuous but constructed spiritual traditions. In esoteric explorations, anything goes but Christ. ABC, anything but Christ (or Catholicism).

Morality will not be important in the new world. Our controllers want to be unlimited in what they can do. The cultivated break down of society enables the demise of the West and justifies technological control. Removal of religious, collective, communal and societal norms of behaviour allow us be medicalised and technologised instead. Ostensible indulgence in the abnormal, occult and esoteric allows the feeling of licence instead of freedom.

The esoteric empire lauds what are often secret processes without having to explain everything that goes on behind closed doors. At the same time it often engages with public, presented exoteric aspects of religion in order to extinguish their opposing power so their own can rise whilst infiltrating them. Hint of the liberating exotic tropical island triumphs over the apparently relatively dull reality of duty and care and duty of care. Being esoteric, there is no accountability and no internal transparency. A member sworn into a secret pyramidal structure cannot answer for the doings of those higher-up but they bind themselves spiritually. Ostensible objectives are often laudable. Who is against brotherhood? Well when it is more hood or masks and darkness, we might think again. The overriding focus is on technique. Many apparently diverse movements are explained by their specific technique of their organisation and general technique of their formation. Such techniques are subsidiary to the technique of technology and control Jacques Ellul explained. Commitment to technique allows technology gain an apparently inevitable force of manifestation which suits the Promethean disposition of our materialist controllers, communist or capitalist.

The effect of the Singular Revolution will be to end humanity. The bifurcation is accelerating. One group begins to be non-humans as their dependence on technology leads to merger in a creator caste system. The other are extinguished, enslaved or experimented upon. In that panorama, most ‘spirituality’ is becoming a delusion to distract from our demise. Most supposedly innovative re-imaginations will vanish like wisps of mist in the quiet morning. Much consciousness-raising will become like piped music for the animals in the stalls plodding to their destruction.

“Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places. Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect.”

- Ephesians 6.

You may not accept principalities exist beyond this dimension but they do. Even then you don’t have to be a genius to work out that corporations rule the world. Esoterica is gaining a vague form as a cloudy reality. It obscures Christianity and especially Catholicism whilst denying the extensive documented history of its mysticism, spirituality and supernatural context as well as its central base. I have no problem with the ontological reality of some Eastern ideas in the psychic and spiritual domain, but such enchantments are often marshalled for disenchanting the West. They were often taken from their cultural habitats and used for other purposes. I am fascinated by comparative religion and the perennial tradition but wary of misappropriation and misuse.

Many Protestants do not seem to have worked out that the princely purpose of their movements is to deliver their countries to the Orient with a symbolic Garden of Eden, Tower of Babel and new Temple through dialectical attachment to Judaism or Arab-Islam pending post-Abrahamic global technocracy (see The End of Protestantism and Biblical Scientism). Imperial and State Protestantism combined with esoteric derivatives and their successor secularism has been heavily influenced and conditioned by Orientalism. This is linked to Egypt and Babylon.

It was not always so. In 1691 The Secret Commonwealth by Robert Kirk, showed how elements of Protestantism understood the Otherworld that co-existed along with the Christian one. In particular he dealt with the middle nature of beings in between us and angels. That openness was indicated too by The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries by W. Y. Evans-Wentz. He went on to publish a version of The Tibetan Book of the Dead. He had been inspired by Yeats. Yeats and Russell discovered the fairy-lore of Ireland as a living tradition and accepted its ontological reality. From the Protestant class in Ireland they had to cross language and cultural barriers to access the living tradition Kirk was very familiar with from his experience associated with the Gaels. But there was another pole that had exerted influence through Theosophy which pointed to India. Joyce thought this was Protestantism too. As Empire opened the floodgates, concepts of a system not well-known in the West flooded in, through London, Boston and California. They came often through imperial conduits or personnel. The Protestant Atlanticist world, primed in particular by Swedenborg, embraced ideas they had little or no experience of. Kabbalah and Tarot or associated ideas were known by Catholics. Protestantism had turned to Kabbalah and Islamic mysticism in its effort to solidify its base as well as through cultivating strategic connections necessary to compensate for loss of Catholic commercial routes. That is why we find the links with enemies of Catholics, in the Ottoman Empire and so on. But this was not new. The Normans who had opposed the Pope in the 11th century and invaded Catholic Ireland had cultivated odd strategic links with Islam by then. That King Charles danced with his hosts with swords in Saudi when he was a prince is not odd at all on a number of levels.

While some managed this esoteric Oriental input well, others used the alternative views and inputs for specific imperial and political purposes that suited an anti-Christian and especially anti-Catholic worldview. Another Protestant, C.S. Lewis, attempted to sketch what had been lost in Europe in The Discarded Image (1964). The fairy-faith still exists on the margins today, hanging by the weakest and slenderest of threads and it had always co-existed with Catholicism. Its demise corresponds with demise of Catholicism somewhat. It is part of the boomerang of modernism led by adoptions from Oriental metaphysician theorists like Nietzsche. Oriental metaphysics thrived in the hub of weapons production of California. It suits empire. The sacred was de-contextualised and appropriated to de-dogmatise Christian dogma for a new self-help - I amgod (see my article James Joyce: AMGOD Dogma, God Ma or Go Mad?). We got a metaphysical inversion which began in 18th century London and continued in California. It seemed nice to hear about the Tao of Physics and The Dancing Wu-Li Masters but it legitimated scientism. Spiritualised scientism is the worst of both worlds and will accelerate us to technocracy and posthumanism. We reach fake spirituality masquerading as advance, promoted unwittingly in the propaganda model inverting the original idea of propagation of faith and instantiating a new pro-pagan simulacrum. Ironic duality of the word or phrase ‘non-duality’ as refraction of Advaita Vedanta is also now in danger of supporting the new posthuman status quo and bears a strikingly similar frequency pattern to other promoted concepts. I detect a chilling postmodern, posthuman appropriation of a de-contextualised tradition to serve other purposes about obscuring distinctions between machines and humans – AI-posthumanism. Instead of the reality of tradition (which some equate with an egregore) we get an anti-tradition which deconstructs it not least with over-simplified, secularised versions of egregore concepts.

“Actually, it depends on how recent the GPUs are that have arrived. At this point, we find our GPUs to be quite reliable. There’s infant mortality, which you can obviously iron out on the ground. So you can just run them on the ground and confirm that you don’t have infant mortality with the GPUs.”

- Elon Musk

As the world is re-shaped in spaces cut off from democratic scrutiny, leverage of concepts of little explanatory power allows existing practices (such as the dignity of life itself) be dismissed as delusions. Meanwhile occult concepts of dark sorcery and collective alchemy are promoted in exotic locations with esoteric logic. Musk is merging his AI and space exploration to adhere to the pattern planned at least a century ago. Note how ‘infant mortality’ now refers to machines while the DOJ publish emails where rich people talk about getting rid of the poor. The whiff of underworld smoke wafting through the weft of the WEF invites serious consideration of what the dark elements oppose. Exotic islands typify exotic islands of thought implanted within our matrix to supplant the existing paradigm. Utopia is an island. For scientists, artists and magicians, that often involves space to experiment. But even Huxley’s Island could not escape the military-industrial complex. So Utopia must be the globe. The utopian experiment is then often zoological on the way to cybernetic global control which involves displacement of the previous symbolic rulers. Look at the history of Plum Island and Gruinard Island and the intervention in nature. Deadly human intervention is accepted but notional divine, benign intervention is not. Zoology was critical in the evolution of cybernetics. It prefigured a regressive devolution of human to a lower zoological status without divine pretensions.

We are to look down and not up. It is no surprise the Virgin Mary and Christ detonate something deeper in adversaries. The Virgin Birth seems to set off many scientists and atheists. Many apparently knowledgeable esoteric students will accept reality of all kind of mythic, occult and sorcerous stories but ridicule the Virgin Birth. Socio-political critique also claims a strange preoccupation with virgins and sacrifice manifest in the Annunciation, Incarnation and Crucifixion, ideas of atonement and blood sacrifice of Jesus. Yet the peculiar preoccupation they note is often paradoxically most evident in militant atheists.

When I turn to secular commentators in novel form (like Philip Pullman) or US academics of philosophy and theology, we get the same result about the Virgin Birth. It amounts to no more than that you might get from a barstool bore and is of a type repeated by esoteric thinkers. Someone must have impregnated Mary and it was hidden. It was constructed because there are other such myths that sound like it. It was just made up. At the same time, some academics are at pains to chide us about our misrepresentation of Baal. We are being unfair to this respectable deity. We get ideological deconstruction by secular atheists who insist on our obligation to respect reconstructed myth whilst rejecting Christianity as lesser mythology and greater ideology.

Arnold Böcklin’s painting or series of Isle of the Dead was one of the most popular in the 19th century. It was supposedly the favourite painting of Adolf Hitler. If we think of the Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) we see a parallel place outside civilisation and beyond reach of morality. Transformation on a threshold may link some mythic past to a fantastic future. Epstein fits in with his mates as pirates of the Caribbean. The transmuted Anglo-American empire in corporate form beyond regulators can avoid control. Such islands often imply a new life and a world whilst really being preoccupied with death or posthumanism. We have forgotten that the idea of created beings or divine images in humanity also involves a special quality or essence associated with life and existence itself. Some contemporary scientists, especially sympathetic advocates of eugenics, transhumanism and posthumanism - may be drawn to such places, actual or imagined, where they can play God and be as gods whilst they reject and deny divinity beyond their own. They are capable of finding AI to be divine and even capable of creating ‘God’ whilst arguing the existing concept is a construct. Yet the denial of, and rebellion against, God and religion usually involves another religion. While this may be science, technology or scientism, there are also oddly recurrent themes that return to the Middle East and ancient gods and demons. It is not conspiracy theorists inventing such interest because even the scientists tell us.

In the greatest of ironies, the mentality drawn to notional secret island experiments often suggests or involves experimentation with blood, sacrifice of living beings whether in labs or occult ways, reconstruction of human life, including through gene-therapy and ectogenesis. Two-faced scientists reject the Virgin Birth so they can create mechanical virgin births – see my article Entombment or Enwombment: Mummy or Mother. When a culture denies divine transcendence, it often recreates it in tech-form. The island becomes the stage where secular transcendence is imagined. Prospero reflects John Dee. But there is no living Miranda on this island only a Madame. There is no Christ-sacrifice as lamb atonement but innocent blood commandeered for power. Christ symbolically volunteered (like an animal sacrifice conducted in public) in a creative claim for moral redemption through self-emptying whereas involuntary, occult sacrifice inverts divine assertions for demonstrable mundane power through self-aggrandisement. Daedalus worked on an island, Crete, away from Athens. His son flew, like preparing a private jet. Through a deceptive mechanical reproduction the Minotaur was created. Sacrifices of young boys and girls had to be made to it. Cretan bull symbolism in Crete and bull symbolism in Baal worship reflect a shared Mediterranean mythic vocabulary. Structural parallel between the Baal cycle and the Cretan cycle are striking. Calypso too lived on an island.

Uncertainty about what exists leads to two competing ontologies. Dealing with existential spiritual uncertainty and order involves a tension. A deep insight recurs around the relationship to spiritual or divine forces intuited, imagined or even encountered. It is mainly resolved or collapsed into a dichotomy. This may involve coherent and creative resolution of existential uncertainty through a sacrifice. Alternatively the solution results in a return to a new order of creation adversarial to that which could not be controlled. This Promethean (or Watcher, Luciferian, Satanic or Ahrimanic at times) attitude appeases contingency by returning a destructive modality to the cosmos. Destructiveness or de-constructiveness either reflects darkness of inexplicable forces or the internal rebellious ones. The path of self-sacrifice and participation yields to uncertain potential by interpretive trust and orientation. The rejecting approach attempts to close uncertainty of creation through taking by force and destructive sacrifice of others in a new order created. Remember J.D. Bernal told us a century ago what would happen. He is the father of the science of science.

“Mankind - the old mankind - would be left in undisputed possession of the earth, to be regarded by the inhabitants of the celestial spheres with a curious reverence. The world might, in fact, be transformed into a human zoo, a zoo so intelligently managed that its inhabitants are not aware that they are there merely for the purposes of observation and experiment.”

To create the new world, God must be obscured or transmuted. While some might consider Mary to be an egregore, a closer analogy would be the simulacrum of Mary deliberately created through the corporate form of Madonna and the Virgin Group as an associative changelings. But the existing paradigm must be changed by re-conceptualisation. Promotion of the egregore concept helps. Here is the key, mythopoetically or not. Some Watchers were still in God’s kingdom and favour and the fallen ones were not. This meant that angelic beings skilled in technological insight persist. Knowing they could not come to heaven they could over time instantiate a matrix which allowed them merge with humans whilst destroying that which was created in God’s image. The denial of a Godly construct of the cosmos helps. By denying God, the only option for humans eventually is to merge with the ungodly after yielding the garden to a zoo. We are solely talking about technique of soul merger. Stay human. Stay in your soul. Evolve spiritually. Orientate your spirit. Or take the Isle of the Dead vision of the afterlife that many did, from Hitler back probably to Judas, instead of persistence and resurrection. Maybe the shadow side of the Promethean spirit is one with the Watchers Enoch encountered, fallen irredeemable and unholy and hence dedicated to deconstruction of divine creation through reconstruction. Build Back Better. No.

My latest book, Trotsky vs Jesus was released in Spring of this year. I think it is my most important book so far. If you are looking for a shorter more general read, the introduction to my series of non-fiction books, Empire of Scientism is a good place to start. To find out what AI will mean for the world - read AI-Govnerveance.

My latest novel is Ireland I Don’t Recognise Who She Is. Never did I think the title would become so prescient as quick as it did. My first novel is a more complex read, Blue Lies September, ‘It was the most controlled of times, it was the most chaotic.’

If you prefer poetry, have a look at Mystic Murmuration or Secret Orchestration.
