James Scott Bell · Whimsical Wanderings

A Happy 4th of July to you all! 250 years ago 56 men signed their names to the Declaration of Independence, including insurance man John Hancock and shirt maker Button Gwinnett. Hot dogs and beer were served, followed by a game of Frisbee golf.

Benjamin Franklin is often quoted as saying, “God made beer because he loves us and wants us to be happy.” But as Yogi Berra observed, “I really didn’t say everything I said.”

Franklin’s actual words are in a 1779 letter: “Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”

Sir Walter Scott composed the following:

“God in his goodness sent us the grape

To cheer both great and small;

Little fools will drink too much

And great fools none at all.”

But there is a foolishness that is an anodyne to dismal moods, and it’s called JSB’s Whiz Bang.
