James Powell, Clay Adams · The Fiction Coach

Writer, letterer, and all-around damn good guy, Clay Adams, invited me to try Substack Live, and it was way more fun than any live stream should be.

Okay, maybe that’s overstating it, but I love talking with Clay, and anyone who’s chatted with me about storytelling knows how much fun I have talking shop.

In the video, we talk about opening scenes, starting small, using the beat sheet as a diagnostic tool, and so much more.

We also talked about my book, Self-Editing for Comic Book Writers, which is live on Kickstarter.

What we didn’t get to talk about was Clay’s lettering or his upcoming book, Blood of the Grunch #2. I’ll remedy that with another live session in the near future. (The Grunch series is sure to please comic fans this fall.)

If you like videos like this one, let me know.

Seriously. Like this post, leave me a comment, or shoot me a message.

I’m already tempted to do a live stream once a month and talk about writing, editing, collaboration, and all things story. But I only want to do it if there’s an audience for that sort of thing.

Thank you to Jessica Maison, Justin Gray, Matthew Schofield, and many others for tuning into my live video with Clay Adams.
