Major was sat, in one of his rare moments of obedience, on the spare seat of the Land Rover. As Reeth opened the rear door the Labrador looked wistfully at him whilst sniffing the air. Tucked under John’s arm was a bracket clock. Its Georgian origins belied its condition. It was encased in Honduras mahogany and engraved intricately upon its brass face with the name of the maker, Viner of Regent Street.  John had also been the successful bidder on a vintage leather suitcase. It wasn’t too large and sported in heavy gold block letters the initials of its original owner.  John had no use for a suitcase as he rarely went anywhere these days but it proved to be the perfect size for the clock.  John, with the delicacy of an open heart surgeon, lowered it in gently. There were only three people left at the end of the bidding,  one of whom was Patrick Jessop. John secured the Land Rover door and looked pleased with himself. It had been a rare battle to acquire the clock and it was always gratifying to leave an auction with the very item that one had gone for in the first place.
