James O'Boyle · The Doodler

I gave Wiley the day off for this one, and sketched this stuffed Pooh Bear instead.

I’ve had this little guy for years—he has a lot of sentimental value for me, and he’s really fun to sketch!

My initial intention was to draw with a continuous line, but I quickly changed gears. The sketch was still really fast, and I had plenty of time to add color and a simple shadow with watercolors. I used a black watercolor pencil dipped into my water for the button eyes and nose. On the whole, the sketch took about 8 minutes.

Could I have added another layer of shadows to his body, under his head and armpits? Maybe, but this was supposed to be a quick sketch, and I felt like that would be too fussy.

As I’ve said before, in a 10 minute sketch, you don’t really have time for glazing techniques that require you to wait for your watercolors to dry. Instead, here I used a deeper shade of yellow touched into the wash while the paint was still wet, which allowed me to work quickly and not worry about muddying my colors.

So, what animal are you going to draw for Prompt #6?

As always, thanks for watching, and happy sketching!
