Teachers Need More than Your "Support"

“Let me know if you need anything.”

Most teachers have heard some version of this from a school leader. Most know it usually means very little.

While reading research on learning organizations and PLCs from the 1990s, I was struck by how often effective leadership was described in terms of being accessible and supportive. Important qualities, certainly, but not sufficient ones.

Teachers do not need principals to do more teacher work. They need principals to do principal work.
