I Tried On Banana Republic’s Archive Reissue Collection So You Don’t Have To

Throughout the aughts and 2010s, Banana Republic’s collections were defined by minimal, office-appropriate staples like crisp button-up shirts, flat front trousers, v-neck sweaters, and clean derbies. But before the mall brand stale made clothes for the weekend warrior, they were a label that was much more concerned with rugged outdoor adventure. In fact, the label kicked off in 1978 as a curator of far-flung military surplus gear before it started developing its own in-house collection.

Yet despite straying from its original vision, beginning last year, Banana Republic decided to bring back its early days aura in a couple of ways. The first was by doing curated drops of authentic vintage Banana Republic merchandise via its website. The second was even more recently, when they recreated exact replicas of their own retro wares for a modern capsule collection called “Archive Reissue.”

Now, I’ve owned a handful of vintage Banana Republic items myself over the years, and found them to be excellent, durable, great-fitting garments. So when I saw the release of the “Archive Reissue” collection, naturally my curiosity was piqued. But just seeing pics on Instagram and e-commerce shots never tells the whole story. So I had to find out for myself if these items live up to the promise of authentic vintage BR, which means delivering not just on vintage aesthetics, but feel. That’s why I ventured to the brand’s Rockefeller Center flagship store to give these items a go in person, trying them on to ultimately analyze their fabric, fit, and overall style as they might slot into my own 2026 wardrobe. Below, you’ll find my review of every item I tested, ultimately determining whether or not I like them and think you, dear reader, should scoop them up for yourself.
