Jagger Waters · Media Mirror: Jagger’s Substack

Some kids went to soccer practice after school.

I hung out behind the scenes at local broadcast television stations, doing my homework in editing booths and quiet corners behind the set.

My parents were blue collar journalists who worked in newsrooms all around the United States. Even when I was quite young, I overheard conversations around the corporate buyout of small-market television stations firsthand, and saw how the careers of journalists transformed as on and off-camera talent was pressured to adopt social media and other emerging tech. I noticed that some adapted, and others resisted.

I recognize the fear around AI in the entertainment industry as a form of grief, similar to the anxiety and mourning that my parents' peers experienced in the late 90s and early 2000s. But I am not afraid, because no matter how unrecognizable our workflow processes become as we integrate more technology, the strengths of powerful storytelling remain the same.

I spoke about these personal influences of mine and how they helped redefine my identity as an entertainer in the face of rapid technological change with Peter Bittner on The Upgrade 👇
