Jae DiBello Takeuchi, Ph.D · Small Talk about AI and Sociolinguistics

Is it hypocrisy to take a critical stance on AI, and still use it yourself? And still use in your classroom? No, it is not. That’s what I indeed to do all semester long: maintain a critical stance about the discourse around AI, while using it with my students in my Japanese language class. Although I don’t believe the “use it or be replaced” hype, I do believe that expectations for AI use will continue to increase, so it’s crucial that both faculty and students have a certain level of competence and comfort with AI. I also believe that there are numerous tasks for which AI can be beneficial. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, there are important limitations to AI, as well as significant problems (those hallucinations, for starters). And the only way to understand both the benefits and the drawbacks of AI, and to be in a position to shape the future of AI incorporation, is to use it yourself.
