The Land We Fight For

I’d like to share a fresh documentary film “The Land We Fight For” with you today, released earlier in 2025.

The structure and premise of this film is really simple. There are two farmers, Ivan in Ukraine and Argo in Estonia. Both are in their 50s, and both know the threat and crimes of russia. The families of both are also involved in defending their land: Ivan’s son is defending Ukraine on the front line, and Argo’s sons are active in Estonian Defence League, our voluntary defence organization.

There is no war footage in this movie, other than a calm video call with Ivan’s son on the Ukrainian front line, who simply says about himself and other defenders, “we are working.”

The simple premise, ethereal soundscape, and calm composition leave all the more time for introspection and deeper meaning. Both farmers offer their thoughts on their land, literally and metaphorically. One’s family fights for it today, the other hopes that war will not come to them, and is assisting the other one to keep it this way.

The land we fight for. The land we have. The land we love. The land that is our home. Is there anything else, really?

It’s not explicity said anywhere in the communication, but I get a hunch that this movie is a marketing project for NAFO and assisting Ukraine. I say this in a good way—I believe that helping Ukraine defend herself against russian invasion is the biggest cause of my lifetime, and anything that furthers this cause is good and just.

In the movie, Argo and Ivan end up meeting in Kyiv, as Argo hands over a NAFO truck to Ivan. In the final shots of the movie, we see Ivan driving this truck—perhaps to deliver it to his son’s unit, or some other Ukrainian defender unit that needs it.
