I lost my wedding ring on Friday.
How?
It is gone into the ocean, Atlantic to be specific, and will never be seen again. I looked for it for 10-15 minutes before finally dragging myself out of the water and telling my wife, “Well, it is gone,” while I held my ringless hand up.
First time since 12/23/14 that I have not had a wedding ring on. I don’t take it off for cooking or manual labor or at night to sleep. It has fallen off a couple of times in the shower but that’s self-contained in my house and it doesn’t disappear with the waves.
Poseidon got a basic bitch, to him, palladium band. To me I love 12 years of loving my wife and while the new one, which is already in the process from my jeweler who I called, post-haste upon the return from the beach.
Don’t worry, I will fuck up this new one pretty hard like I did the old one so it isn’t some shiny piece, it is more lived with and in. I’m good for that between garbage disposals and chainsaw or hedge trimmers, let’s go ahead and SPOT THE BALL!!!
1st Down: The Earth Is Trying To Kill Me
What are we even doing right now?
We went to the beach on the day where it was real feel 106 in the morning, only to go up, and thankfully my best friend did have a shibumi.
They do work. The shade plus the ocean breeze was nice and unlike an umbrella or the canopy, all we did was move chairs and he and I kept our feet out of the sun while the girls played in the water.
My wife, who I love dearly, also looked for the ring and basically it was a big waste of time for all of use but I do get to have it re-sized and be new. Yay. We all win.
2nd Down: Back to the Youth Sports Well
I am not a Bill Simmons devote, I like him fine, but he did say somethings that resonated, not just with me but with guys I played with and guys who I am friends with who played baseball at UNC.
We all have kids now. Kids who are good at sports to varying degrees but honestly most of our kids are very good. They’re also between 6 and 11. So, who cares?
We care. It is one thing if your kids are on a team together, ie my wife’s friends and swim. You know your weekends off and on, where meets are, you sit together and look out for each other.
However, We don’t interact with friends who are baseball or basketball families almost at all because they have a different schedule than we have regarding meets, practice and the social calendar.
You miss birthdays. You miss actual things that matter with your friends, neighbors and classmates. More importantly, you’re 8.
Not a lot of “Best 3rd Graders” turn into Top Draft picks, Olympians or FIFA World Champions.
I just new how to manage everything but my parents didn’t spend extra money on it. i went to a police camp, Adam-2 for basketball, I went to Methodist College camps for baseball and football because I spent a lot of summer in Fayetteville with my grandparents.
No famous private coaches or shit like that.
3rd Down: New Definition of White Out
Penn State, known for their amazing atmosphere “White Out” games:
Goosebumps.
Now they have another whiteout situation with double digit people arrested for cocaine trafficking and distribution. Less goosebumps, more just jaw clenching.
I’m not pearl clutching over this. Yack is a part of the college experience, at least was a part of my college experience, because I was a door guy who had to go get 3 guys or 4 girls out of stalls so they would stop holding up the bathroom lines.
It was prevalent.
They skipped the middle man and became the middle man, and the top boy. Some folks are going to jail for real jail because they crossed statelines going from New York to Pennsylvania. We will see if daddy can get them out of this. One daddy already on the rap sheet.
4th Down: Back To School Red Velvet Cake
Not a lot of football shit going on besides camp. However, we did have our “pre-back to school” hang with some family friends. Played a card game, had some pizza, movie night with popcorn and pizza downstairs for 6 kids, at my house.
That said, my favorite part was getting to make a Top 3 cake for me; Red Velvet.
The other two? Cheesecake with a strawberry swirl and my wife’s favorite Carrot Cake.
Red Velvet slaps with the cream cheese icing.
I didn’t break out my full kit for proper finishing, just the turntable and the spreader but it tasted so good. Moist. Creamy. Between the farm and the parent hang, folks did indulge in the cake and doing shit like that is what I absolutely love about being 41.
Going to have them over again for an actual sit down dinner once we are all back in the throes of school and routine is established.
Cheers!!!
