Salaams everyone, and hope you all are having a sublime Ramadan!
I wanted to offer some quick thoughts on where I think the world is heading, especially for readers living in western societies. I believe World War III has already begun, with global crises like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war serving as serious inflection points within a much larger geopolitical chess game.
As author and economist Jim Rickards is reported to have said:
“First there are currency wars, then trade wars, then real wars.”
The Iran/U.S.-Israel conflict is just another proxy skirmish in the grand power struggle between America, China, and other more shadow and possibly nefarious players.
I think three important things are at stake for the average Jane and Joe over the next few years, if not decade: your health, your wealth, and your children’s well-being.
Your Health: Our food supply is not the cleanest, financial pain and suffering are at near historic highs, and a variety of other external stressors may only get worse as global conflicts escalate and adversely affect economies around the world.
Maintaining decent health over the next few years is crucial— physical, mental, and emotional.
Your Wealth: The entire world is hundreds of trillions of dollars in debt, and no country will be able to pay it off. On top of that, economic and kinetic wars will continue for the foreseeable future, leading major governments to print obscene amounts of money. They will dilute your salaries/savings, and in some cases, absolutely decimate your currency through hyperinflation. I won’t even touch on AI/automation and the economic impacts of that.
Saving money in hard, unconfiscatable assets (think gold, real estate, and potentially blue-chip cryptocurrencies, etc.), and finding work that will be tough for AI to replace (think relationship-oriented jobs or complex blue-collar type work) will also be crucial.
Your children: The easiest people in the world to manipulate and profit off of are kids. Those buggers will do anything and listen to anyone for dopamine hits and highs. Protecting them from unscrupulous media power brokers, unethical corporations, incompetent and/or sociopathic government leaders, etc., etc. is paramount.
This substack is interested in educating across all three of these factors; I just use Islam, neuroscience, and history as the lens through which I do so.
