ASTRONAUT AFFIDAVIT Born freakishly whole, looked upon and then cast out, no wonder. Elaboration of self, of sole of left foot, dainty oblivion in the putrid science classroom. I grew old overnight. My myth-mangled mother was not my mother. No one could convince me otherwise. Spare me the bloody beets. The ants in the garden. What a nothing life. Uncosmic. Pronounceable. Everything is boring compared to god’s love. Give me terror. Give me the dark side of the lonely land. Lonely land without word, raw step, raw vision, first bite of the apple, the Earth so quaint like a dog going away to die. I need my sadness. Do not take it from me. Take only this misshapen truth— I walked. I felt. The world does not need us.
