In last Friday’s “Headlines” post, I mentioned the news that Elon Musk had bought a gas turbine maker for a reported $1 billion to power a data centre that appears to be an especially sharp thorn in the side of climate conscious media. For turbine makers, however, data centres are a blessing with no disguise whatsoever. Turbine makers are one happy industry. For now.
A week ago, JP Morgan reported that global gas turbine orders had hit an all-time high in the second quarter of the year, reaching 38 GW as of end-June. This, the bank said, as quoted by Bloomberg, was a 29% jump from the first quarter and a 71% jump from a year earlier. The world cannot get enough of Siemens Energy’s, GE Vernova’s and Mitsubishi Power’s turbines. Because the world is building data centres and gas-fired power plants. And you can’t rush a good turbine.
