• Ira Sylvester and The Fatefully Vague Concept of Identity

Thirdly, something interesting is coming in the near future: An article about the South African comedy scene. Long story short, In February I travelled to Cape Town for roughly 3 weeks for a holiday because I promised my girlfriend that since we always travel to London on break EVERY SINGLE TIME, the next holiday we go on will be sipping cocktails by the pool. Naturally, that meant I also had to book myself a gig every single night for the first week we were there, BUT THEN we would relax… after just one more gig the following week… (I struggle to relax if I’m not working). Which we did, and it was wonderful, and I kept a journal, and I will share my experiences and… and… and… I have a bunch of ideas that will follow on from this, but for now here’s an excerpt from the journal:

“So I believe Alasdair is saying dolphins are conceptually closer to humans – a perspective I share I’ve learned somewhat recently that dolphins, like humans are utter bastards. Side note: everone on this plane is white![…] Liv just took a pic out the window and it looks like heaven!”

I’m a man with notions that may or may not be popular with the general masses, but as I have advised others, I must lead by example: I will be sharing them anyway. Because I like it, and it’s fun and fulfilling.

Finally, since I’m half-white and in my early thirties I had to, by law, start a podcast. It’s a creative’s advice podcast called The Harlequin Room; you should check it out! It’s only a couple of episodes, but I did just get this review:

“I really liked your podcast; I liked that it was raw, and real. It’s very comforting to listen to your voice too, good for my nervous system, my adorable wonderful son.” - Anonymous

It is rough around the edges, and it’s a learning curve, but I’m proud of it, and I am enjoying the process – even if I am constantly stressed by the imaginary deadlines I set for myself.

It’s not just me, though; recently I released an episode with Tim Ford – a comedian (officially, since he has completed more than 50 shows), a booker, a comedy club owner, and an all-round swell guy to chat with. It was insightful and a good laugh; I think you’ll like it.
