Prince Tamino gets saved from a serpent, handed a magic flute, and shown a portrait of a beautiful girl — and just like that, he’s on a quest. His reluctant sidekick: Papageno, a bumbling birdcatcher with magic bells and extremely low ambitions (he just wants a girlfriend).
The mission: rescue Pamina from the villainous Sarastro. Twist: Sarastro isn’t the villain. The girl’s own mother — the Queen of the Night — is. She’s been lying about everything, and she’d like her daughter to commit murder, thanks.
While Tamino navigates mysterious temples and tests of silence and courage, Papageno mostly eats, talks when he shouldn’t, and nearly hangs himself over a girl. Magic bells fix that.
Tamino and Pamina face fire and water together, protected by the flute. The Queen attacks. The Queen loses. Love wins, wisdom prevails, and Papageno finally gets his Papagena.
