People ask me all the time how this all started: there are really two answers. You could say INTERRUPTED started in August of 2022 when I met with a company to start designing a pant. But, really…it started long before that.
I am 5’10”. I have been tall since I was about 14…and yes, middle school dances were awkward. So, I have been on the hunt for long pants, and skirts, my entire adult life. It has always amazed me that men’s pants frequently come in inseam but women’s pants rarely do. Why is it assumed women are all the same height? If we ever meet, you will notice that I have taken the hem out of the jeans I am wearing! This has been the way I have dealt with never finding pants long enough. Until now.
I think I have played with the idea of designing pants that provide length options for decades, talking myself out of it every time: there’s too much going on, I don’t know what I am doing*, I have no experience in fashion, I can’t justify the start-up costs, what if I invest in it only to fail. I hate excuses, especially when they are coming out of my own mouth.
But then one day, it seemed possible. Side note: I think, in part, the several months of EMDR therapy to get over fear surrounding a traumatic event cleared some space (I will tell you about that some other time). I came out of that therapy experience with no fear; so, I jumped.
It was also helpful that I suddenly found myself surrounded by an amazing group of women that were willing to help, a spouse telling me to go for it, and the overwhelming desire to try. So, I said, fuck it** what’s the worst that could happen?! My husband keeps telling me the worst thing is: I may wind up with a few hundred pairs of pants that I love, and are the right length. He’s not wrong (don’t tell him I said that).
So here we are: I’m starting to fulfill a dream. I am about 18 months in and it has been: exhilarating, exhausting, overwhelming, and an absolute blast. I am humbled that I even get the opportunity to try. I want INTERRUPTED to be a collective, a culture, and a statement for women. I am thrilled you are here to see the beginning! Since you are, you get a behind the scenes peek at our first photo shoot.
