From the Southern California Coast... to the heart of Mangum, Oklahoma.
Every Monday morning has become a little sacred for me.
Before Rodd’s A Corner of INsights reaches your mailbox on Friday...
Before readers across Mangum pour their first cup of coffee...
Before the conversations begin...
I get to quietly sit with his newest column.
Sometimes I laugh.
Sometimes I smile.
Sometimes I find myself whispering,
“Oh... this one is going to stay with people.”
This week’s column did exactly that.
Not because it was dramatic.
Because it was honest.
Because somewhere between entrepreneurs...
therapists...
physicians...
and ordinary people trying to figure life out...
it quietly asked one question almost every heart has carried.
What happens when the life you planned... doesn’t happen?
Can I tell you something?
I don’t think any little girl dreams about becoming the woman who has to start over.
Neither do little boys.
Children don’t play “divorce.”
They don’t pretend to lose businesses.
They don’t imagine illnesses.
They don’t dream about grief.
Or loneliness.
Or wondering if they’re too old...
or too late...
or too tired...
to begin again.
No.
Children dream about possibilities.
Somewhere along the way...
adults become experts at making plans.
And life...
well...
life has a funny little habit of smiling lovingly at our calendars.
As I read this week’s column, I realized something that made me put the pages down for a moment.
Every conversation Rodd had this past week sounded different.
One spoke about rebuilding after losing everything.
Another spoke about carrying emotional burdens most people never see.
Another reminded us that even our bodies remember what our hearts have tried to forget.
Three conversations.
Three completely different people.
One remarkably similar truth.
Sometimes...
life changes the plan.
Without asking.
Without warning.
Without apologizing.
And somehow...
that doesn’t have to become the end of the story.
Maybe...
just maybe...
it’s where the real story begins.
One of my favorite Barbie-isms has always been:
“God rarely wastes a detour... we’re usually the ones trying to turn around.”
That’s one of the reasons I love what we’ve been building together through Independent Media Source.
🎙️ INsights & Straight Talk asks better questions.
🪑 Voices at the Table reminds us every chair has a story.
📖 Poems & Pages reminds us that healing often arrives quietly.
💗 Barbie-isms simply reaches across the table...
takes your hand...
and whispers,
“You’re allowed to begin again.”
And maybe that’s why this week’s column felt so personal.
Because it wasn’t really about business.
Or psychology.
Or health.
It was about identity.
Who are we...
when the titles disappear?
When the children grow up?
When retirement finally arrives?
When the career changes?
When the relationship ends?
When life doesn’t look anything like the picture we carried around in our hearts?
Maybe...
that’s the moment we finally meet ourselves.
Living here on the Southern California coast, I often watch the tides.
Every single day...
the ocean lets go.
Then it returns.
Never exactly the same.
Never exactly different.
Just...
faithfully becoming.
Perhaps that’s what resilience has always looked like.
Not pretending nothing changed.
Not refusing to cry.
Not holding everything together until we quietly fall apart.
Maybe resilience is simply trusting that tomorrow is still willing to meet us...
even if today didn’t go according to plan.
So here’s my little Monday challenge.
Stop asking whether your life looks like the one you planned.
Ask something gentler.
Something kinder.
Something infinitely more hopeful.
Who am I becoming because the plan changed?
Because perhaps...
the greatest chapters of our lives are never written inside our plans.
They’re written inside our courage to begin again.
One more sunrise.
One more prayer.
One more conversation.
One more chance to become exactly who God always knew we could be.
And somehow...
I think that’s a much more beautiful plan.
With all my love,
