Okay, Mangum… Let’s Build Something

From the Southern California Coast... to the Heart of Mangum, Oklahoma.

Every Monday has become a little tradition for me.

Before Rodd’s A Corner of INsights arrives in the pages of the Mangum Star-News...

Before coffee is poured across Mangum...

Before Main Street comes fully alive...

I quietly sit down with the next column.

Sometimes I smile.

Sometimes I laugh.

Sometimes...

I simply stop reading for a moment.

This week...

I smiled the entire way through.

Because this wasn’t really a column about an election.

It was about what happens after one.

And somehow...

I think that’s where the real story begins.

One sentence reached right through the page and settled into my heart.

“What are we going to build?”

Isn’t that the question every community eventually has to answer?

Not...

Who won?

Not...

Who lost?

Not...

Who’s right?

But...

What comes next?

I think that’s one of the sweetest Producer Barbie lessons life keeps teaching me.

Celebration has its place.

So does disappointment.

But eventually...

Morning arrives.

And somebody has to unlock the doors.

Open the business.

Teach the children.

Fix the roads.

Plant the fields.

Serve the coffee.

Wave to the neighbors.

Life keeps moving.

So should we.

One of my favorite little Barbie-isms is this:

“The future isn’t built by the person with all the answers... it’s built by the people willing to keep asking better questions.”

That’s exactly what happened inside this week’s column.

One Facebook post became another question.

One question became another conversation.

One conversation introduced another voice.

And suddenly...

Something beautiful happened.

People began adding what they knew.

One person understood funding.

Another remembered history.

Someone else knew what had already been tried.

Another saw possibilities nobody else had considered.

Then came one of my favorite thoughts in the entire column:

“Nobody sitting alone knows everything. Together, we know a whole lot more.”

Oh my goodness...

Can we put that on a billboard?

Because that isn’t just true for Mangum.

It’s true for families.

Churches.

Schools.

Businesses.

Friendships.

And maybe even our country.

Living here along the Southern California coast, I often hear people ask,

“Who’s going to fix everything?”

Reading this column reminded me to ask a different question.

Who already knows something that could help?

What if the answer has been sitting beside us all along?

Maybe it’s a retired teacher.

A banker.

A rancher.

A young entrepreneur.

A former board member.

A business owner.

Or the quiet neighbor who’s been carrying years of wisdom without anyone ever asking.

Rodd’s curiosity about sitting down for coffee with Jymmy Joe Martin made me smile. It wasn’t about proving a point—it was about learning from someone else’s experience and discovering what opportunities might already exist for Mangum.

Sometimes...

The next big idea begins with a simple invitation.

“Tell me what you know.”

That also reminded me why I love the Mangum 2030 Initiative.

It’s never been about chasing impossible dreams.

It’s about connecting people.

Ideas.

Resources.

Experience.

Hope.

Its Five Pillars continue pointing toward exactly that future.

That’s not politics.

That’s neighbors building something together.

That’s also why our IMS family continues growing.

Different conversations.

One mission.

Empowering the Great Middle Class... One Conversation at a Time.

So this Monday...

Maybe the election isn’t the headline anymore.

Maybe...

The conversation is.

Maybe the next great investment isn’t measured only in dollars.

Maybe it’s measured in curiosity.

In trust.

In coffee shared between neighbors.

In questions honestly asked.

In wisdom generously given.

Because if this week’s column taught me anything...

It’s this:

Communities don’t become extraordinary because one person has all the answers.

They become extraordinary when ordinary people decide to bring everything they know to the same table.

And perhaps...

That’s exactly how the next chapter of Mangum begins.
