There was a time when Thursday night meant somebody's living room was full.
Not everybody had cable. Not everybody had the good TV. So you went next door, or down the block, or your cousin came over with a bag of chips and claimed half the couch before the theme song even started.
Watching a show wasn't a solo act — it was a reason to be in the same room as people you loved. You reacted out loud. You called each other during commercials. You knew exactly what your neighbor thought about Whitley before the credits rolled, because she was sitting right there telling you.
That's what A Different World was built on. Hillman wasn't just a fictional campus — it was proof that Black community, Black joy, Black debate could hold a room for thirty minutes a week and nobody wanted to leave.
September 24, Netflix hands us a new version of that room. New students, new stories, same Hillman ground. And we're not about to watch that alone on mute with our phones in our hands.
We want it back the old way. Everybody in, at the same time, reacting together — even if "together" now means a screen instead of a couch.
So we're throwing a watch party. A Different World Virtual Watch Party — free, open, just for us. Bring the people who get it. Bring the ones who need to be introduced to it. However you found this community, that's exactly who belongs in that room with us.
