While this Substack hasn’t been the most active, the new website will be a completely different story.
What I experienced with Substack was that it couldn’t attract any interest from the world – and I believe that it is because the first thing people see when they enter the Substack is something that looks like a paywall.
Of course, if you are familiar with how Substack works, you’ll know that there’s a tiny text under the “paywall” login field, and if you click on that text, you’ll be let in without even telling your email address.
But most people don’t know that, and most people don’t want to experiment with something that looks like a closed party. So, a Substack is mainly for other Substackians, and even with good visibility in Google searches, it can’t easily attract readers from outside this sphere. That’s how it often goes in the social media world.
But now there’s a complete website dedicated to Inidox Data, as I have chosen to call it – inspired by the logo icon that was originally made for this Substack.
In order to make the new website work, I took the web address data.inidox.com, that was previously assigned to this Substack, and it is now the address of the new website. It means that this Substack has moved back to the automatic address, assigned when first creating it: inidoxdata.substack.com. We’ll see how that goes and what consequences it will have, but so far, I find it okay – after all, the page has mostly been read by people who are on Substack, so for them, you, it should be a recognizable address.
The new site has a minimalist design, optimized for speed and usability, but along the way, it will get more features and more contents. I will then try to keep a good balance between the additions and that mentioned speed and usability, so it will continue to be a pleasant place to visit.
The first post is: Actionable Insight: The Nature of Data Analytics
More posts are scheduled for the next couple of days, and I consider also to add some courses, if there’s an interest in it. I imagine introductory courses for various tools, and also intermediary and advanced course to display how certain things can be done.
There’s initial no newsletter, and no other way to be informed automatically, when something new appears, so you’ll have to check the site regularly to keep track of that. I may add some kind of newsletter later, but until then, you’ll need to be active yourself ;)
The new site is without a comments option, unfortunately, as it is a huge task to maintain this on a private website – a comments option works as a magnet for spammers, and I have previously had websites that got hundreds of spam comments every day, making it difficult to notice those one or two real comments that would appear now and then.
But we can talk here, on this Substack! That’s the main reason for keeping it open. And there’s a dedicated page on LinkedIn as well, that also allows for comments.
With this move, there will be some cleanup to do on this and other Substacks, and elsewhere, to update all links, etc., and that work will stretch over some time.
For now, please take a look at the new site, and feel free to tell your honest opinion about it – plus, if you have any suggestions for contents or features, or perhaps some other thoughts, I’ll be happy to hear about those too.
