Michael S. Atkinson · Michael’s Musings

Previously in Edison City, the Phenomenal Four telepath Audrey had warned Super Soccer Mom of her mysterious dream in which Super Soccer Mom’s daughter Tamsin was trapped in Frisbee form and embedded in the side of an enormous spaceship! Super Soccer Mom has begun investigating by trying to find the Green Moth, who’s disappeared, while also hoping to keep her daughter out of this latest crisis! Which absolutely works, right? Ha ha ha! No.

We’ll find out what Meg’s been doing all this while, but first, a quick note: all Edison City stories and serials can be found at the Edison City Index!

And now, the adventure continues!

Sisters talk. Some days they might be in a fight with each other and they don’t, but even so they’ll still talk. And then the next day they’ll make up and they’ll talk about how terrible the fight was. Even if they’re not necessarily talking to each other, they’re talking to their friends, and sometimes they hear something really important and they feel like they can’t necessarily tell their mom but they can tell their sister. This kind of thing happens even in Edison City.

For example, when Audrey told Meg about the dream she had, she also told her husband, because husbands and wives also talk (among other things). It happened, however, that this conversation occurred at the breakfast table when their daughter Meredith was, they thought, absorbed in a book. Ordinarily Meredith might have been, but when she overheard the name of her friend Sauna’s sister Tamsin, she couldn’t help taking an interest.

As soon as Meredith could, she contacted Sauna to ask what was going on and was Tamsin in trouble and could she help and OMG my mother can dream about the future now that is so very weird I cannot even I really cannot (this happened on text, Sauna not being a telepath herself). The first thing Sauna thought of doing was asking Tamsin but then she didn’t want to because Tamsin didn’t like her anyway and she probably deserved whatever it was, the little - [Sauna was going through power control and puberty simultaneously, which was a bit of a strain just then].

After some minutes, she decided to ask Meg what to do instead. Meg had already been brainstorming ways to find Samuel Superlative the Third. Sauna’s question gave her an idea how to do both.

The Mauve Mosquito had gotten a tip about a certain hangout in the city where certain mad scientists could go if they wanted to acquire certain body parts that one couldn’t acquire on the open market and that one wasn’t exactly planning to use for organ donation, so to speak. She liked to go after this sort of thing as a way of easing her conscience about the other sorts of things she did to keep her payments to Igor U current.1 She was just about to leap off the rooftop on which she was standing and zoom away when she was interrupted.

“Hey,” Meg said, without preamble. “You go small, right?”

The Mauve Mosquito felt a little insulted. “Well, it’s not just “going small”, it’s a complex process involving advanced miniaturization technology even I don’t fully understand-”

“Yeah, yeah, okay,” Meg said. “How small?”

“What do you mean?” the Mauve Mosquito said cautiously.

“Quantum?”

“I-” the Mauve Mosquito paused. “You’re not trying something like time travel, right?”

“And that would be impossible why?” Meg said.

The Mauve Mosquito rolled her minuscule eyes. “I should write this down, I’ve had this talk so many times. Can’t do it, okay? Shrinking’s one thing. Messing with quantum physics and getting into Time and Reality and all that, that’s a whole other thing all by itself. I’d need to get an advanced degree in Eigenvalue Composition just to even take a stab at it, and even then I don’t even know if it’ll work and that’s counting the edge I have with already being able to shrink, I don’t even know about taking along someone else for the ride let alone changing anything!”

Meg sighed. “Would it help if I told you I kinda sorta did it already?”

“…what?”

She explained, as best she could, how she’d inadvertently yeeted herself back in time2 and then how she’d averted a Dark Future3 and then-, which was when the Mauve Mosquito interrupted in her turn. “Okay, okay, fine, so you can do it. I don’t know, don’t ask me, but you can. That doesn’t mean I can!”

“Maybe it does!” Meg protested.

“Maybe I don’t want to find out!” the Mauve Mosquito shot back. “Anyway, why do you wanna know?”

“Well, let’s see, it’s either because the Malevolent Med-Student turned Samuel Superlative the Third into a sugar plum and I hid him someplace I thought he’d be safe and then my sister went and took a bite out of him or it’s because that same sister got herself stuck in a spaceship somewhere in the future which I only know about because the telepath’s daughter told my other sister Sauna who told me so now I have to save my sister and the guy she maybe kept from getting turned back into a guy!” Meg said all this in one burst of words. It’d been a very trying couple of days.

“Oh,” the Mauve Mosquito said. She’d seen the sugar plum thing on TV; she hadn’t heard about the rest of it. “Well… we can give it a shot, I guess. I need some stuff, though. Meet me back here in an hour?”

“Cool,” Meg said grimly. “That’ll work.”

Will Meg and the Mauve Mosquito succeed in going quantum, time-traveling, and thereby saving both Meg’s sister and Samuel Superlative the Third? Meanwhile, what about Super Soccer Mom’s contact with the agents of D.E.R.P.? And where’s the Green Moth?

We’ll find out (maybe!) next week as the adventure continues!
