Weekend Plans?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give a quick update on the past few weeks of screenings before the Lunar New Year!

The last year ended on a high note for Migrant Women Rise. We partnered with Bad Times Disco to host a screening and mutual aid fundraiser for Gabriela Hong Kong, a grassroots migrant organization featured in the film. Altogether, we were able to raise over HK$54,000 (US$6,895)! It was a great turnout, and we’re grateful for all the support and awareness raised through the screening.

This past week has been a homecoming of sorts for me. On Monday (Jan 16), we were hosted by the Filipino American Ministry Initiative (FAMI) of Fuller Seminary for a virtual screening. I just finished my Master of Divinity at Fuller this past December, and FAMI has played a big part of my experience in seminary. So it was great to cap off my theological studies by getting to share my film with the Filipino American community at Fuller.

On Thursday (Jan 19), we had a screening at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University (ASU) - the school that I graduated from in 2010. The event was hosted by Dr. Anthony Pratcher, my high school classmate from Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ. So to be able to come back and share my film with college students in collaboration with my high school friend was a surreal experience and a real throwback.

Our goal with this film is to raise awareness about the situation of Filipino migrants and the struggle they face both in Hong Kong and the Philippines, so we are hoping to do more screenings.
