I can feel the walls of summer closing in on me. Somewhere along the way, we somebody decided that summer = July. I know so many schools (especially down South) head back to school in August. And having spent many summers in North Carolina, I get it — August is mostly a soggy hell. It’s too hot by by breakfast to enjoy much of anything. But I wasn’t even done with my school year until the end of June, so please excuse me while I put my blinders on — it’s still summer around here and I will be ignoring all BTS and fall propaganda until further notice.

Yesterday marked my daughter’s last day of camp for the summer. She spent two weeks with my parents and then did stints at art camp, dance camp, and vacation bible school. And even though it feels like we’re barreling towards the start of the school year, we’re actually only halfway through our summer break. The next five weeks will shift our daily rhythms again, and I’m trying to find a good balance between routine and rest. We’re going to spend some time this weekend making a list of things to do (so far, the zoo and the Statue of Liberty are high on the list), but I’m hoping most of our days will include slow mornings at home and afternoons at the pool.

I’m switching things up this week, in the spirit of prioritizing rest over routine. I’ve got a reading list and a fun game of Camp Counselor P.O.V. See you next weekend!

I’m reading as much as I can lately. Here’s some things I recommend adding to your list this week — Who Will Protect Us When No One is Looking? | Alexis Wormley’s Weekly Deposits is something I’m still working on | I’ve been listening to Momfluenced by Sara Petersen | Heart the Lover (yes, still) | Traci Landy wrote the most beautifully vulnerable post about ADHD | I need to know if anyone else is in on the Natalie Portman/Rachel Cusk beat | The NYT recipe that had me cackling all week.

P.O.V. — I’m your slightly disgruntled, definitely underpaid camp counselor.

I’m your water sports camp counselor. I’m spending all my time at the lake and I have a zero tolerance policy for complaining about how cold the water is in the morning. I might push you off the dock, with love. Don’t touch my whistle.

I’m your arts and crafts counselor. I’ll help you get the knots out of your friendship bracelet project and braid your hair after swim. Yes, you can hide in the arts cabin when your bunkmates are being mean, but you have to help with mural painting while you’re there.

I’m your wilderness counselor and we will be learning how to use a compass, come hell or high water. No, you cannot wear flip-flops on the trails. I can’t promise you’ll enjoy the hike, but I can promise there will be s’mores at the end of it.

Where are you at in your summer? Are you still in the blissful middle, or desperately waiting for the start of the school year? And most importantly, which camp counselor are you this summer?
