Illustrators—especially those who are trying to build a career, a portfolio, their connections, etc.—have a lot on their mind. What’s the best website host for me? Agent or no agent? How do I find art director emails anyway?!? Where should I focus my marketing efforts? Do I really have to be a—GAG—content creator? Can I expense coffee? Why doesn’t the toilet work? Yes, I know the porch won’t renovate itself.
You also need to draw and paint every now and then.
All of this takes time. Extremely valuable, frustratingly limited time. So when you do manage to carve out a minute or two to actually illustrate, you need to maximize those minutes. And let me tell you, you do not need to spend nearly as many minutes some illustration advice-givers suggest on “leveling up” your skills with perspective, light and shadow, and detail. A) You ain’t got the time, and B) Those three aspects of illustration are waaay overvalued.
