Welcome, adventurers. Are you ready to begin?
You come across an ancient scroll (this Substack). The scroll speaks of the great Ron Spears—an artist of unmatched renown. If you read it, you will gain great knowledge—but at the cost of great sadness. What do you do?
Ron Spears was born in 1960 in Tacoma, Washington. Little is known about his childhood (including his exact birthday). However, the 1960s and 70s marked a golden age for fantasy and science-fiction illustration, fueled by fantasy paperbacks, science-fiction magazines, role-playing games, and a growing interest in imaginative worlds.
Spears would have likely witnessed this proliferation of fantastical imagery—from the rise of Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars to the work of a generation of influential fantasy artists like Frank Frazetta and Boris Vallejo. If Spears drew from an early age, it’s easy to imagine how these images and ideas may have shaped his work.
