Some days are loud. Some days focus is elusive, colors are bright, and scent pierces the forehead to set teeth on edge. A world of endless possibilities must, by definition, also contain grating and occasionally appalling Noise.
A cacophony of summer birdsong at dawn can be overwhelming but not Noise. The Noise is created to fill the senses with packing filler. Shiny distractions. No room is left for thought.
“It’s funny how mortals always picture us as putting things into their minds: in reality our best work is done by keeping things out.” (Screwtape) C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters.
Stop. Disconnect. Soak your head. Breathe deeply. Walk amongst the trees and under the clouds. Let the rain fall on you. Let forthright birdsong overwhelm your mind as the sun rises. Build your defenses.
I offer some nice things to look at. No pressure. Just clouds in a sketch. A southern Live Oak sketch. Ferns in the rain. The Ring of Brodgar, Orkney. A piece called “Have not Love” I Corinthians 13. A peacock on a friend’s lawn. Obligatory kittens. Redwood trees. A coppery sunflower.
