my other love is photography pt.2

Hi, I’m Phoebe and chances are you signed up to my mailing list at a sound bath. I also record and release ambient music under the name IKSRE (which stands for I Keep Seeing Rainbows Everywhere 🌈). I also love taking photos, pondering big questions and seeing photos of your pets.

I’ve already shared with you why my other love is photography - but recently, I’ve managed to narrow that down further.

Nothing can compare with the pure presence, and intention of setting up a photo, knowing that you won’t see the finished result for weeks. Maybe months (if, like me, you tend to take several trips’ worth of photos per film).

Even the mere idea that each photo costs around $2.50AUD (film and developing costs) adds a layer of intention. And then, there’s the paper and chemicals involved, which then adds an environmental impact layer (although firing off 83 shots of the same group photo on your device, to then be housed on a massive server - that has it’s own unique environmental cost).

I’ve just finished sorting through the field recordings I took on Lord Howe Island back in April - a pristine beyond words paradise in the middle of the pacific, where there’s no evidence of human visitation or habitation pre-1788. Birds, fish, Galapagos sharks and insects were the only things living there.

On LHI, there’s not much to do - unless you like hiking, snorkelling, birdwatching, eating the freshest Kingfish and Avocados you’ve ever tasted, and seeing the plants that you keep hostage in your house, in their natural habitat (the Kentia Palm is endemic to the island).

It was perfection.
