I Fucking Love Australia · I Fucking Love Australia

At the stroke of midnight on Friday, Donald Trump slapped 50 per cent tariffs on thirty billion dollars of Canadian goods. Hockey sticks. He tariffed hockey sticks. A man declared economic war on Canada and his opening artillery barrage was aimed at the one object every Canadian household owns in triplicate and knows how to swing.

Saturday morning, Mark Carney walked to a podium in Ottawa looking like a bloke who’d slept fine, thanks for asking. A reporter put it to him that it felt like he was going to war. The Prime Minister of Canada, a career central banker with the natural charisma of a quarterly earnings report, looked back and said four words.

“Because we were attacked.”

▶️ Carney Saturday presser, Ottawa offering ZERO FUCKS to Drumpf

That’s the whole speech my curious little koalas. That’s the doctrine. Nobody grovelled down a phone line and nobody scrambled a jet to Mar-a-Lago with a gold-plated gift and a folder of flattery. Carney skipped the ritual entirely, the one where the visiting leader reads “productive and wide-ranging discussions” off a card while the knife’s still parked between his shoulder blades. The Americans asked too much and offered too little, he said, so Canada will match the tariffs dollar for dollar, and come the Tuesday after Labor Day the counter-battery fire opens up on American steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, pulp, paper and electronics.

King Carney read the clock weeks ago. Now he’s reading it out loud to the class.

And how did the Attila the Hun-gry of the free-falling world respond to being told no by Canada? Did he sleep on it? Did he fuck. He crawled onto Truth Social at sparrow's fart on Sunday and typed, with three exclamation marks, that Canada wants the benefits of being a State without being one. Then, apparently unsatisfied with the size of the crater, he was back at half past eleven on Monday night, the hour God reserves for divorced blokes texting their exes, to announce that from the first of January 2027, cars, trucks, parts and steel all cop 50 per cent, and that, quote, Canada will be treated like a State no longer. Thirty-six hours apart. In the first post, statehood is the treasure Canada is looting. In the second, it's the privilege he's confiscating. Pick a fucking lane, sunshine. A fermenting swamp-gas emission in a suit is driving the world's biggest economy off a cliff and the silly cunt cannot even keep his own bullshit consistent between dummy spits.

Have a squiz at that date, though, because it's doing something fucking beautiful. January 1, 2027. The midterms are November 2026. The dopey prick has scheduled his knockout blow for the other side of his own political funeral, which is the front-bar equivalent of squaring up, poking a bloke in the chest, and announcing the fight's booked for sixteen months from Tuesday, subject to him still being allowed in the pub. Carney stood at that podium and promised to back Canadian businesses beyond the life of this US administration, and Trump's response was to confirm, in writing, that the big guns don't arrive until after the voters have had their say. The Bluff Auditor didn't even need to run the numbers on that one. The client did the audit for him.

▶️ The clock, in Carney’s own mouth. “we will support these businesses for as long as it takes”. “beyond the life of this US administration”.

And the numbers in that midnight post are pulled straight from his own arse anyway. The sixty billion dollar deficit exists only if you ignore that America buys 99 per cent of its imported natural gas, 85 per cent of its imported electricity and 60 per cent of its imported crude from Canada, and ignore the services trade where the money flows the other way, which Carney laid out from the podium, calm as a bank statement, while Washington was still drafting its erotic fan fiction about being ripped off. We don’t need Canada, declares the man whose 26 biggest state economies count Canada as their number one customer, whose citizens sold Canadians $1.6 billion of goods and services every single fucking day last year. Australia should be so lucky to get neglected like that. And then he signed off with “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”, the exact energy of a bloke disputing a parking fine while his minivan sits on fire across two disabled bays, which, given how this trade war is travelling for him, is about fucking right.

Here’s the part the rest of the world needs to tattoo on the inside of its frikkin eyelids. Canada cannot leave. Canada shares the continent with this blustering blowfart of bloated bullshit. Same landmass, same border, nine thousand kilometres of it, bridges and pipelines and supply chains stitched straight through both economies. They even built the bridge. Built it, paid for it, the lot, and one of Washington’s actual stated grievances, straight from Carney’s list at the podium, was that Canada wasn’t handing over a cut of the tolls. Imagine your neighbour building the fence, paying for the fence, mowing your side while he’s at it, and then copping an invoice for standing too close to the palings. Now imagine the invoice arrives at sparrow’s fart with three exclamation marks on it. If any country on the planet had an excuse to bend the knee, it’s the one that can see Buffalo from the front porch. And instead they told him to get stuffed, and when he didn’t take the hint, to get fucked, politely, in both official languages.

Meanwhile, look at the other end of the table. Xi Jinping runs a one-party surveillance state and even he wouldn’t cop this shit. Say what you like about Beijing, and I’ll say plenty on other days, but when Trump came out swinging tariffs, Xi stood his ground and made Washington blink first. So the scoreboard currently reads one communist autocracy and one mild-mannered Canadian banker whose idea of a big night is reconciling a spreadsheet, both standing firm, while the rest of the so-called free world sits behind the couch with the lights off and the telly muted, pretending nobody’s home while the bloke works his way down the street rattling every flyscreen on the block. If ever there was a harden the fuck up moment for our leaders it’s now.

▶️ “Unacceptable”

Because here’s what he actually demanded behind closed doors, and Carney read it out like a charge sheet: language restricting Canada’s ability to sign trade deals with anyone else. He didn’t just bully the neighbour. He tried to write a clause banning the neighbour from making friends. That’s not a trade demand from a superpower, that’s a hostage note with a letterhead conjured up by a guy with one foot in the grave and a few roos loose in the top paddock.

Harden the fuck up. All of you. Brussels, Canberra, Tokyo, London, Seoul, the lot. The playbook is public now and it’s one page long. He asks for everything, offers nothing, and folds the moment somebody with a spine matches him dollar for dollar. Every capital still queueing up to negotiate separately, cap in hand, is playing straight into the hands of a Dollar Store Metternich whose entire strategy is picking you off one lunch money envelope at a time. Pile on together and he’s got nothing. Napoleon Blownapart cannot fight a trade war on twelve fronts with an economy already groaning under his own tariffs and petrol prices his own voters are screaming about.

And here’s the strategic genius of what Carney’s doing, because make no mistake, this is cunning dressed up as calm. He has clocked exactly which Trump he’s across the table from: the November model, the lame duck fuck the midterms are about to make of him, a president whose own party is staring down the barrel with sweat on its lip. Manitoba’s Premier Wab Kinew said the quiet part at full volume this weekend: Trump has two years left, hold strong, outlast him. Carney heard all that and decided the calendar could do the heavy lifting for free.

So from one Commonwealth cousin to another: Canada, we see you, cobber, and we’re bloody proud of you. You copped the attack, you named it as an attack, and Mr. Elbows of the G7 answered it with the calm of a man who has already done the sums and knows how this ends. The whole planet is paying the human tariff right now, every economy on Earth, and the repeal mechanism is standing together.

The bully on the block just got told no by the neighbour he thought was softest. Every other house on the street should be walking out the front door right about now.

THE AUSSIE-TO-YANK WORD WIZARD: SAME WORD, DIFFERENT HEMISPHERICAL PINDROP

Australian and American are technically the same cuisine, the way Vegemite and peanut butter are technically both spreads: one of them is dark, oversalted, baffling to the rest of the planet, and genuinely dangerous when applied too thick, and the other one is the Vegemite.

cobber: A mate, but vintage grade. Digger slang from the First World War, the era when Australia first started RSVP’ing yes to America’s fights. When an Australian calls you cobber, you’re in.

squiz: A quick look. “Take a squiz” is an invitation to inspect something, issued roughly 8 seconds before the swearing starts.

get stuffed: The polite-company cousin of “get fucked.” A flat, dismissive “go away and take your nonsense with you.” Distinct from plain stuffed (broken, knackered, doomed), though a bloke can tell you to get stuffed while being thoroughly stuffed himself.

dummy spit: The noun form of spitting the dummy. Where "he spat the dummy" describes the act, "a dummy spit" is the artefact itself, gradable like earthquakes. A world leader posting tariff threats at 11:38 PM registers somewhere near the top of the scale.

travelling: How something is going. "How's it travelling" enquires after progress; "travelling well" means on track; "how this trade war is travelling for him" means badly, because if it were going well we'd have said so without the euphemism.

get fucked: The senior partner of get stuffed, deployed when get stuffed has been tried and the message failed to penetrate. The full diplomatic escalation ladder runs: get stuffed, get fucked, and then whatever Canada does with its dairy tariffs.

flyscreen: The mesh door standing between every Australian household and ten thousand airborne bastards. Rattling someone's flyscreen is the universal signal that a visitor wants attention and is not planning to be polite about it.

cop it: To take it. To absorb a blow without flinching, usually because everyone is watching and you have no choice. To “cop it sweet” is to take your hiding gracefully.

sparrow’s fart: Dawn. The hour so early even the sparrows are only just up and about their business. When a president is posting at sparrow’s fart, the grievance did not sleep either.

palings: The vertical timber boards of the classic Aussie backyard fence. Neighbourhood disputes are measured in palings: leaning on them is friendly, peering over them is nosy, and invoicing your neighbour over them is a declaration of war.

did he fuck: The Australian negative, dressed as a question. "Did he apologise? Did he fuck." No answer is required or expected, because the answer is contained in the contempt. Yanks reading this as a genuine enquiry about the bloke's love life are advised that it means "he absolutely did not," and that the presence of a question mark is purely ceremonial.

harden the fuck up: The great Australian prescription, dispensed free of charge for every ailment from a grazed knee to a collapsing world order. Not a request for toughness so much as a diagnosis that you already have it and are choosing not to use it.
