Here’s your July update:

A bizarre and brutal story has been circulating through Monaco this week: a targeted bomb attack on a Ukrainian oligarch in the lobby of his residence. The detail everyone’s quietly fixating on is that he wasn’t with his wife, but with his long-time mistress, who lost both legs in the blast. For a place where discretion is practically a currency, it’s the kind of incident people are still talking about in low voices over lunch—when they’re not complaining about bus and cruise ship tours clogging up the elevators and sidewalks.

If you don’t mind the crowds and the heat, July is an ideal time to relax on Nice’s pebble beach or Cannes’ sandy beaches, dip into the Mediterranean Sea, and enjoy a glass of locally-made rosé wine. The markets, concerts, and coastal promenades remain festive throughout July, allowing you to soak up the southern French summer lifestyle at a leisurely pace.

Remember: Smokers can no longer light up on any French beach, park, or bus stop, (or risk fines from €135 to €750) as a much-appreciated nation-wide smoking ban came into force on June 29. And more good news: Cannes has voted to keep all cruise ships over 1000 passengers out of the Old Port starting this year; Nice already limits arrivals to one large ship per day. Hopefully Monaco will follow suit!

As usual, July is jam-packed with events. Here are the big events this month:

Annual Shopping Sales (now until July 21): The big soldes d'été sales event is on, with the discounts getting bigger and the month progresses. It’s a grand French tradition, a bit like a (much) more civilized (and multi-week) version of the ‘Black Friday’ frenzy in the US.

Monaco Summer Concert Series (July 3 to mid-August): For almost half a century, the Monte-Carlo Summer Festival has been a mainstay in the summer concert calendar. Tickets sell out quickly!

Cannes Fireworks Festival (July 4, 14, 22 & August 4, 15, 24): Every July and August, the bay of Cannes lights up when participants from different countries show their most artistic and majestic music and pyrotechnic fireworks performances. (But we wish they’d upgrade to drone-based light shows, because of how damaging fireworks are to the environment).

Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge (July 8-11): A showcase of sustainable and innovative watercraft technology, including boats powered by solar, hydrogen, and other clean energy sources.

Jazz à Juan (July 9-19): Held in Antibes, this is another one of the oldest jazz festivals on the continent. 

Pink Parade (July 11): The official Pride parade, with a wide range of people, including drag artists and queer activist groups, coming together to celebrate the festivities. After the parade, the fun continues at the “Pink Drink” party at the front of MAMAC, with awesome DJ sets, singers, and dance acts. Allies welcome.

Classical & Jazz Festival (July 20-29): Concerts in St. Paul de Vence, by young virtuosos and proven talents. Experience the brilliant mastery of the great composers, and the exalted freedom of instrumental and vocal jazz.

Nice Jazz Festival (July 23-25): One of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe and an unmissable French Riviera event. Since its first event in 1948, the Nice Jazz Festival was said to have been “the first jazz festival of international significance”.

Menton Music Festival (July 25 to August 7): This summer, expect a line-up that draws on a variety of different orchestras, chamber music, star soloists and recitals in a series of flamboyant musical vignettes.
