Natalie Moore · The State of Possibility

This week is about choice and not the huge life changing choices we can or sometimes need to make.

But rather the quieter choices that shape who we become over time.

This week in Australia we lost a great man, Neale Daniher, who fought in the face of a terminal illness to create awareness, change and hope. He knew this was not going to serve him, but he hoped it would serve others in the future who were diagnosed with MND.

He made a choice.

Watching back some of his earlier interviews, he was adamant that despite his diagnosis he had choices in how responds and moves through this time. Some of his words will live on forever, such as this quote:

MND takes everything from you except your last great freedom; and that’s your right to choose your attitude. You choose your own way. And my attitude is don’t give up, don’t give in.”

It’s a powerful reminder that even when life strips so much away from us, there are still parts that remain ours.

Our response. Our perspective. Our next step.

Most of us are not facing life-or-death decisions. But many of us are quietly facing choices every single day that shape the direction of our lives.

To stay or leave a career, to start that business, to pursue that dream, to ignore what we already know deep down.

And sometimes we forget that not choosing is also a choice. Waiting is a choice. Avoiding is a choice. Staying where we are is a choice too.

I think we often put too much pressure on ourselves to make one huge decision that changes everything overnight. But most meaningful change rarely happens that way. It happens through smaller choices repeated consistently over time.

The choice to go for the walk. The choice to apply. The choice to have the conversation. The choice to rest. The choice to try again. The choice to continue.

Little, quiet, daily choices. Choices that become our direction.

One of my greatest marathon lessons is that we rarely feel fully ready to begin something or to make a change. We “choose” first. Then we build evidence along the way.

Evidence that becomes our proof of what we’re capable of. Evidence of our growing confidence and self belief. Evidence of our choices made consistently everyday.

We can’t control everything that happens to us. But we do hold more power in our direction than we often realise.

Sometimes the next step doesn’t need to be dramatic. It just needs to be chosen.
