Marjorie Taylor Greene Is Resigning

In a surprising move, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (MTG) announced she will resign from her position on January 5th, 2026.

Greene posted a nearly 11-minute video to Twitter/X earlier this evening. In the video, Greene makes direct insinuations of her stepping away from the GOP by highlighting the treatment of victims of sexual assault and political corruption.

The decision comes after Greene became more vocal in her displeasure with Trump, the GOP, and the Make America Great Again movement over the last few months. With her biggest gripes directed at President Trump, his economic agenda, and her own party’s handling of the Epstein case, which was a hallmark of the Trump 2024 campaign but has been shrouded in even more secrecy under the second administration.

Greene has also been surprising in her condemnation of the role of Israel, lobbying groups like AIPAC, and the administration of Benjamin Netanyahu in the ongoing war against Palestine. Greene was one of the biggest supporters of Trump, the MAGA, and various conservative conspiratorial movements.

Greene has been a rising star in the party due to her outspokenness and her ability to raise both her national profile and her campaign funds in a district that had never broken through on that level before. Greene’s departure and comfortable wins in that district have now the makings of a potential political star turn for whoever can claim that seat.

Due to her announcement, it’s likely that her seat will be filled by an appointee of Governor Kemp. The 14th district was gerrymandered in 2020/21 to give Greene arguably the safest seat in the state, while also reducing the growing power of the certifiable, Blue-leaning Cobb County. It’s likely that the person who replaces Greene and the swell of likely new challengers for that seat in 2026 could be one of the hottest races in an already contentious election year in Georgia.

Greene won that district comfortably by nearly 30 points in 2020, then again after gerrymandering in 2022 and 2024… yet despite it being the most unfavorable district for Democrats, turnout has increased each time.

MTG is no longer in Congress, but it’s her choice whether to leave politics entirely. Greene has been rumored to be eyeing a position for both Governor and US Senate. While internal speculation seems to be that Greene would’ve had a hard time gaining enough internal party support against Ossoff for US Senate or breaking through a crowded field to secure her party’s nomination for Governor, and then to face a still undetermined Democratic challenger. But if she’s still considering a life in politics, it could be Greene positioning herself as a post-GOP/conservative candidate for President in 2028.

Or she could have a lucrative career ahead, either within the traditional media ecosystem, which is becoming increasingly conservative in its ownership, output, and ideological basis. The traditional media ecosystem of cable news, broadcast, and radio would welcome Greene with open arms. As well as the digital conservative media ecosystem of podcasts, YouTube channels, and news. Or delve deeper into the alt-right and conspiratorial leanings of conservative media as well. Greene is now arguably the hottest name in media and will likely field several offers.

But whatever her next move is, it’s unlikely this is the last we’ve heard of Marjorie Taylor Greene.

There are no boring news weeks in Georgia.
