Lesson 42: When Women Say Women Shouldn't Vote

Today’s lesson of Bossi’s Finishing School for Difficult Women teaches you how to respond when conservative Christian women decide voting is too much responsibility and patriarchy is just easier.

When you see thousands of women at a Turning Point US Rally cheering for household voting, look around and say:

Ladies, do you notice anything peculiar? This room is whiter than a mayonnaise commercial in a snowstorm.

And that matters. Because the fantasy that rights are as optional as a decorative napkin is usually held by people who have been insulated by history into believing someone else will always protect them.

When some woman doing the side stroke through the warm waters of privileged delusion says she’d be fine if her daughter couldn’t vote because she knows she’ll marry a “biblical man,” force a smile and say:

Lady, “biblical man” is not a retirement plan.

Men quoting scripture have lied, stolen, abused power, abused children, covered for each other, and left their wives for nannies, secretaries, and whatever woman made eye contact during a midlife crisis.

When a young woman says she’d give up her right to vote if it meant abortion became illegal, shake your head and say:

Sweetheart, you may be young, but unless I can still see embryonic fluid caking your hair, you are old enough to know that rights do not work like store credit. You don’t get to trade away democracy because you think you personally won’t need it.

That vote protects you when your husband becomes dangerous, your doctor has to call a lawyer before saving your life or the “biblical man” you trusted starts sounding more like Pharaoh than Jesus.

Remember ladies and gents: Letting a man vote for you isn’t faith. It’s outsourcing your citizenship and calling it virtue. Because giving away your power does not make you holy. It just makes you easier to control.
