Nigel Farage marginally increased his vote share in the Clacton-on-Sea by-election and the turn out, of 44% was respectable. But since the other main parties weren’t playing, this hasn’t been an electoral triumph. He still faces an inquiry into his failure to register donations in the year before he entered parliament in July 2024 and the opposition parties will try to force another by-election if he is criticised by the parliamentary standards commissioner. They are determined to get him out.
But there is a much worse problem for Reform which had been leading the UK opinion polls for eighteen months but is now losing the plot. A wobble in the polls led to Nigel Farage proposing an electoral pact with the genuinely far right Restore Britain thus confirming all the attacks levelled at him by the left.
