When gods had left the earth they left it dark No light in the trees -- no light but some stars where they touched the sky and left their godly mark earth they touched too; she still carries their scars We sat; we heard some faint call in the night the stars a distant glimmer in our eyes We heard the wolves howl; we cowered in fright at the horizon we saw the moon rise One of us rose; a shape…

When gods had left the earth they left it dark
No light in the trees -- no light but some stars
where they touched the sky and left their godly mark
earth they touched too; she still carries their scars

We sat; we heard some faint call in the night
the stars a distant glimmer in our eyes
We heard the wolves howl; we cowered in fright
at the horizon we saw the moon rise

One of us rose; a shape against the sky
she was entirely like us; the same
yet soon she made fire; and now we asked why
and if from gods the night we may reclaim

was divine light gone, or just abeyant?
now we ourselves -- slightly incandescent
