While You’re Living Inside the Dust

Dear Friend,

I have been living in liminal space for a while now.

Long enough that the hallway has started to feel familiar. Long enough that the unknown isn’t shocking anymore, just… constant.

There is so much I cannot yet see. So much that is not finished. So much that requires trust without proof.

And if I’m honest, this letter is to me just as much as it is to you.

To the woman standing in the tricky space of so much unknown.
To the one who has closed doors but hasn’t yet walked fully into the next room.
To the one who feels the dust in her lungs and wonders how long renovation takes.

So let me say this gently.

I see you standing in the middle of it.

Not the finished room.
Not the beautiful reveal.
The middle.

The half-painted walls.
The exposed beams.
The fine layer of dust on everything you touch.

You keep thinking something is wrong because it feels uncomfortable.

But nothing is wrong.

Your life is under renovation.

And you’re living inside the dust.

Of course it’s loud.
Of course it’s inconvenient.
Of course it’s not pretty yet.

Renovations always look worse before they look better.

No one posts the drywall dust.
No one photographs the wiring before it’s sealed behind the walls.

But this is how new structures get built.

You are not in a dumpster fire.

You are in construction.

You want clarity.
You want peace.
You want the finished room so you can exhale.

But you are in the hallway.

And hallways are not meant to be decorated.

They are meant to be walked through.

You call this liminal.
You call it unsettling.
You call it lonely.

It is simply transition.

You are shedding one skin while the next has not fully formed.

That tenderness you feel is not weakness.

It is exposure.

Listen carefully.

Being regulated does not mean being unbothered.

It means you do not abandon yourself while everything shifts.

It means you don’t panic and start tearing down walls that don’t need demolition.

It means you don’t mistake noise for failure.

It means you breathe through the renovation dust instead of declaring the house condemned.

You do not need reinvention right now.

You need stabilization.

What does that look like? (These are uncomfortable for over-functioners like myself.)

Fewer big goals.

More tiny anchors.

The same mug every morning.
The same candle every night.
The same walk at sunset.
The same early bedtime that feels like surrender but is actually wisdom.

Predictable rhythms tell your body, “We are safe.”

Gentle movement keeps the energy flowing without turning this into another performance.

Warmth.
Tea.
Blankets.
A fire.
A bath.

You regulate through softness now.

Low-stakes joy.

Nothing that proves anything.
Nothing that builds a brand.
Nothing that advances you.

Just something that reminds you you’re alive.

And think in days.

Not in years.
Not in the grand arc of who you are becoming.

Just today.

What would make today steadier?

That is enough.

I know the temptation.

To rebuild everything at once.

New identity.
New body.
New goals.
New life.

But no one furnishes a house without walls.

You fortify first.

You insulate.

You stabilize the foundation.

This is not stagnation.

This is structure.

You are not behind.

You are not failing.

You are not broken because you are tired of the dust.

You are building something that requires strength you did not need before.

And strength is quiet here.

It looks like restraint.

It looks like not texting the thing that would destabilize you.

It looks like going to bed instead of solving your whole life at midnight.

It looks like letting today be enough.

Know this, dear Friend… one day you will stand in the finished room.

You will barely remember the dust.

But you will feel the steadiness in the walls.

And you will know it was built slowly.

Built honestly.

Built by a woman who refused to rush her own becoming.

For now, just stay.

Stay regulated.

Stay gentle.

Stay one day at a time.

The beauty is coming.

And this part matters too.

Always beside you in the hallway,
Adrian Hygge, FNP 🖤
