My incredible journey through Greece has now spanned a glorious two and a half weeks, and it's been nothing short of transformative. From the moment I arrived, I battled some jet lag for about one week - which is the standard time it takes for me to adjust to the time change. A few nights ago we celebrated my 30th birthday (wink wink) at a Japanese restaurant with gorgeous Greek ocean views! I have generally embraced the quintessential Greek lifestyle, spending countless hours soaking up the sun and the serene beauty of the coastline.
My dedication to beaching has not only given me a beautiful tan but has also been incredibly restorative for my mind and spirit. I truly believe the sun and ocean are healers. Sunlight stimulates the production of serotonin, often called the "happy hormone," which definitely boosts my mood. Seawater is rich in minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iodine. These minerals can be absorbed through the skin, supporting nerve and muscle function, bone health, and overall cellular processes.
Beyond the sun-drenched shores, a significant highlight of my trip has been the unparalleled culinary experience. I've been eating better and healthier than I have in a while, thanks to the abundance of fresh, local produce, lean proteins, and my mom! We have been staying with her and she loves to cook and take care of her kids and grandkids. Most meals have been a celebration of simple, high-quality ingredients – crisp salads drizzled with golden olive oil, succulent grilled seafood, and an array of vibrant vegetables (see veggie stew below). Yes we are very lucky! I’ve of course also enjoyed some gyros, tiropites (puff pastry cheese pies), Greek pastries like galaktoboureko and brick oven pizza! I like to balance my diet on vacation with a mix of health and indulgence. Enjoying a good portion of it on our balcony!
My activity levels have naturally soared since I don’t own a car in Greece. I've been walking everywhere, exploring scenic coastal paths on foot. Each stroll, whether walking to grab my morning Fredo Capuccino, heading to the beach or to dinner, or just going for a casual speed walk after a meal, has helped my anxiety and my sleep tremendously.
The combination of regular sun exposure, seawater, nutritious food, increased physical activity, and the inherent relaxation of vacation has melted away stress and invigorated my senses. It's a lightness I haven't felt in a long time, a true testament to the healing power of a Greek escape.
As I reflect on these past two and a half weeks, it’s clear this isn't just a vacation; it's a recalibration. Greece has provided the perfect backdrop for recharging my batteries, embracing healthier habits, and simply enjoying the present moment. I’m very blessed and lucky to be able to enjoy this trip with my family! I hope you are also enjoying the warmer months with nature, good food and loved ones!
Love + Filakia, Stella
