People Come First.

What do you prioritize? Success? Image? Money? Winning? Personal fulfillment?

Those things make us sound self-centered, don’t they?

Most of us align with the concept that people are more important than things. Yet, when it comes to practicing that stated belief, we often find that we don’t put people first in every consideration.

These three words — people come first — were the answer to a months-long journey I embarked on with great purpose years ago when virtually everything in my life was falling apart. I was being crushed from every side, with seemingly no way out. When I hit my lowest low, I decided there must be something I missed, so I went looking for it.

After months of intentional searching, conversations, study, and introspection, these three words came to me one day.

“Of course,” I said to myself. “I know that. This isn’t revelatory.”

Then I asked myself, “Do I really do this? Do I genuinely put people first in every thought, consideration, decision, and action?”

I quickly found that the answer to this query was no; I did not. I put forth a focused effort to begin this practice. What I found as I made this change was truly life-changing.

My outlook was brighter.

My problems diminished in size and importance.

Everything I needed showed up through other people.

Realities I could never have imagined, much less engineered, materialized.

This “people come first” concept — I’ll even call it a mantra — became the first of three concepts that completely changed my world from a crumbling mess to a world of wonder, discovery, and a new level of success I hadn’t experienced before.

And what about image, money, winning, and personal fulfillment? Well, they came along for the ride.

It all begins with putting people first — really putting people first. Not just in word, but in action.
