brecht wrote the caucasian chalk circle in 1944, in exile, in the middle of a war that was partly about who owned what and who had the right to say so. the central test in the play is simple and brutal: two women claim the same child, a judge draws a circle in chalk on the ground, places the child inside it, and tells each woman to pull. whoever drags the child out of the circle wins. the biological mother, the governor’s wife, pulls hard, because the child is property and property is what she understands. the peasant woman who actually raised the child, who carried it across mountains and kept it alive through a war, lets go. she won’t tear the child in half to prove a point. the judge gives her the child.

the play’s argument is that ownership is a fiction and care is the only credential that matters, and it’s a provocative thing to say now when you apply it to the global monetary system, which has approximately six serious claimants, all of them pulling hard, and the child in the circle being pulled thin. the child, to be clear, is not anything that shows up on a bloomberg terminal. it’s the actual productive capacity that sits beneath all of those measurements: the real output that human effort and accumulated knowledge can generate, which every claimant claims to be protecting and each one is quietly harming.
