Viktoria Verde, PhD · How We Learn Languages

Over the past 2 weeks, we have approached the six-month fluency question from several directions.

In the first free article, we examined what six months can realistically contain. Depending on the learner, it may mean around 60 hours or more than 500. We also looked at the role of starting level, language distance, and the kind of fluency the learner is trying to build.

In the first paid article, you turned that analysis into a personal destination. You defined what you want to be able to do, calculated the hours your life can realistically support, and created a six-month goal based on your language level and circumstances.

This week’s free article turned from the timeline to the learner. Motivation, aptitude, previous languages, interaction, environment, and many other internal and external factors influence how much progress a person can make within the same number of hours.

You now have a destination and a time budget.

The remaining challenge is building a system that can survive the full 6 months.

Most language plans are designed for an imaginary version of life. You are rested, motivated, uninterrupted, and able to study at the same time every day.

Then work becomes demanding. A child becomes ill. Travel interrupts the routine. Motivation changes. A carefully designed plan begins to feel impossible, and the learner starts waiting for a calmer week in which to begin again.

A useful six-month system has to expect those changes.

It should tell you what to protect when you are exhausted, how to use an ordinary week well, what to do when you temporarily have more time, and how to recognise whether your language is actually becoming more available.

In this paid article, you will build a flexible structure around your real life.

You will organise your weekly hours, give each activity a clear purpose, reduce resource overload, prepare for interruptions, and measure progress through what you can do with the language.

You will also receive The Six-Month Language System Workbook, a printable PDF companion designed to help you turn the article into your own working plan. It includes guided planning pages and reusable templates for organising your weeks, protecting continuity, and reviewing progress across the full six-month period.

Use it to:

  • create minimum, standard, and extended versions of your week

  • organise the activities and materials supporting your goal

  • prepare a simple plan for interruptions and low-motivation periods

  • record performance evidence and review your progress every 4 weeks

  • reuse the weekly and monthly planning templates throughout the full 6 months

By the end, you will have more than an ambitious schedule. You will have a system that knows what to do when the week goes well, when it becomes difficult, and when life refuses to follow the plan.

Paid subscribers can continue below and download the complete workbook at the end of the article.
