Yes, we understand the assignment. So let's get something straight...

I want to shut something down right now. The palpable excitement that’s vibrating everywhere and breaking Zoom about Kamala Harris being our Democratic presumptive nominee for President of the United States of freaking America is no “Obama effect.”

It all started with something some dude said on some other dude’s notes, as follows:

And here was my response (lightly edited), which is, my fellow WW, THE F**KING ASSIGNMENT:

But you’re doing what people too often do … you’re erasing the fact that she is qualified, that she HAS done the work. This. is not. unearned. She didn’t just *burst* onto the political scene.

She was AG of the freaking state of California. One of the largest economies in the world.

She was a Senator and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee (among others).

She was a legitimate Presidential candidate in 2020.

She’s been our GD Veep for almost four years. And being Joe Biden’s VP has only made her better than she already was in her own right.

Sure. She also represents, rightly, what so many voters have been hungry for, and women especially: One Of Us. Someone who understands how the systems are set up to ensure that we give up and go back to the kitchen.

But with this post, like so often happens, you made it about a man. (*cough* PATRIARCHY!)

This isn’t an “Obama effect,” ffs. This is Kamala Harris being exactly HERSELF and exactly the right—and the most qualified—candidate at exactly the right time.

She was made for this. She IS the Mamala we need to hold TFG (and all those f**king guys) accountable and to set things right for our democracy.

And hear this: Hillary. Was. Too. (People like you just couldn’t see it yet. And neither could far too many of us. But boy oh boy have things changed….)

Hillary WON the popular vote. But because of B.S. (whyt supr€m@c!st) institutions like the Electoral College (and because of the ancient, out of touch, undemocraric Senate and Mitch McConnell and all of us letting him steal a SCOTUS nomination that cost us Roe; another thing President Harris will have to fix), because of Russian bot farms and an FBI that was against Hillary, and women in general [post 2024 election ETA: watch the Martha Netflix documentary—James effing Comey is who went after Martha Stewart and put her in jail (for lying to the FBI, not for insider trading, fyi), too!], and a whole host of other ways ultra conservative, authoritarian global and domestic forces (such as [tech] billionaires and those who’ve bought up and undermined and slanted mainstream media [and, since, all but obliterated important social media organizing tools we relied on in years past—I mean, SPORTS BETTING apps, ffs?!]) had to cheat and lie and stack the deck against her, she didn’t end up being our President.

Imagine where even more women—AND OUR FAMILIES—like Kamala Harris might have been today if not for alllll of that. If not for the fact that people just like my husband hadn’t fallen for all of it and voted for TFG that first time??

Imagine what might have been possible—including when someone like Barack Obama was our President for eight years—if we all hadn’t been raised to disbelieve, distrust, discount and UNsee women of color—black women especially. ← And recognizing this and making it clear for people like ourselves at every available opportunity is the freaking assignment.

But sure, mediocre manilla dudes, keep telling yourselves this is just an “Obama effect.”

We WW over here, and the people who love us, will be joining up with the folks who’ve always known—because they were raised to understand that OUR EXISTENCE IS POLITICAL—will be working our tails off to make sure people understand this truth and GETTING KAMALA HARRIS TF ELECTED!!!!
